*Manga will be read on Viz Media through screen share - the first three chapters of almost any manga is FREE which is approximately the amount of chapters that will be read during each week.* *The manga chosen to be read each week will be reviewed by myself to check for appropriateness. Although it appears that manga around the ages of 10-15 may contain some inappropriate language from time to time.* Welcome to the Let's Read Manga and Discuss Class! In this on-going class, every week, we will read the first three chapters of a new manga that no one in the class has read before (except for the teacher). The structure of the class will usually involve reading the first chapter and discussing, and the moving onto the second and lastly the third. However, it is important to note that occasionally the class may not read all three chapters if we feel as though there is a lot of discussions to be had from the first and second chapters. Also, usually a chapter is 20 pages, but sometimes, the very first chapter of a manga can be 60 pages. This would mean that it may require that we stop half way through the first chapter. Therefore, whether we cover three chapters or not is dependant on the aforementioned factor. The purpose of selecting a new manga every week is to make the reactions genuine and it also allows everyone to give their genuine thoughts and initial impressions on the characters, plot, art, pacing and whether they will continue on with the manga series in their own time. Had someone already read the manga before, then it would mean their discussion/input is not based on their initial impression but rather something that has been built on over time. However, it is understandable that at some point, we will reach a stage where it will be difficult to find a manga whereby no one has seen it before, and thus we may have to select a manga that one or two learners have seen. This brings me onto the next point. How will the manga selection be decided? During the end of each class, I will ask all learners to provide me with some manga that they would like to watch for next week. I will then briefly read the manga the learners suggest to check if it is suitable and appropriate for the age group. Thereafter, I will select the manga to be read for next class. In order to be fair, I will make sure that each week a different learner's manga suggestion is chosen. Class Structure: The procedure as to how this class will be structured is as follows. Once the class starts, we will wait a few minutes for learners to arrive on time in order to read/follow the manga simultaneously. Learners will follow the read through by the screen share tool. Prior to reading, I will inform learners of what to look out for when we read the manga together for the discussion portion of the class. This will include the following: Characters: This will usually cover everything to do with characters such as favourite characters, personality traits, character designs etc. Plot/Story: Discussing whether we like the story/plot so far, if we think there are going to be plot twists etc. Art: As Manga is heavily drawn, this gives learners a great opportunity to comment on art work/style and overall visualisation. These are some examples of what the discussion would look like after reading each chapter. Furthermore, this class serves as a great opportunity for learners to improve their reading ability, improvisation and voice acting. In regards to reading, the procedure is that each learner will take turns either reading one page each or a few pages each. HOWEVER, if learners do not want to read and just want to follow along and discuss, then that is perfectly fine too. In terms of improvisation and voice acting, reading manga is all about how you interpret the voice based on the drawings and even general noises the characters may make if they are stressed, upset, angry etc. This gives those learners who may want to pursue a future in voice acting an opportunity to practice as they read the chapters. Lastly, this class is also an excellent way to develop communication and social skills through a common interest such as reading manga. This will often be teacher-led, but once the discussion starts, it will often be student-led ⇢ Week of 10/28/2024: Reading Manga ⇢ Week of 11/4/2024: Reading Manga ⇢ Week of 11/11/2024 Reading Manga ⇢ Week of 11/18/2024: Reading Manga Please message me if you have any concerns!

I have been watching anime and reading manga since my childhood. However, I also like to delve deeper into each episode/chapter, looking particularly at character development and plot progression. This is also helped by my formal expertise in literature.
