Let's play piano!  In this group course, beginning students will learn the basics of playing the keyboard. Students will have the opportunity to play some well known folk songs such as "Down in the Valley" and "Pop! Goes the Weasel." 

This course is for students who have finished Level B group course. Students may also join this course if they can read notes "C-D-E-F-G" in the treble clef and bass clef. Students should already be familiar with the rhythms "quarter, half, dotted half, and whole" both notes and rests. They should be comfortable playing 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 time signatures. These are the prerequisites for this course.
In this class students will use the "Bastien New Traditions All In One Piano Course" Level 1A by Lisa, Lori and Jane Bastien. The purchase of this book entitles students to access the Kjors Interactive Piano Studio available for desktop and tablet. The Interactive Piano Studio will give students the opportunity to play along side a backing track.

Students will be able to share what they have been learning by creating videos using the Flipgrid website. This secure website allows only the student's teacher and classmates to see their progress. If you do not want your student to use the Flipgrid platform, they can also submit videos directly to the teacher through the Outschool classroom. Students will also be allowed to show what they have learned at the end of class if time permits.

In this course students will learn to play the accidentals: sharps and flats. They will work on articulation as they play slurs and staccatos. They will learn the intervals of seconds, thirds, fourths, and fifths.
Students will be expected to practice outside of class time. Students should bring a pencil to class in order to complete the writing assignments that will be presented in class. Most of these assignments will be completed during class time, but some outside work may also be necessary.

The teacher will need to see the students hands on the keyboard to ensure that the student is playing correctly. You may need to adjust your webcam or device to make this view possible.
The course will break down as follows:
Lesson 1: Review C 5-finger position. 
Lesson 2:  Learn the difference between a slur and a tie.
Lesson 3: Learn the intervals of a second and a third.
Lesson 4: Learn the interval of a fourth. 
Lesson 5:   Review tempo markings.  Play "Down in the Valley."
Lesson 6: Learn the interval of a fifth.
Lesson 7: Review the intervals seconds through fifths both melodically and harmonically.
Lesson 8: Learn to play staccato.
Lesson 9: Learn to play the note "A" in the treble clef using a left hand crossover.
Lesson 10: Play "Pop! Goes the Weasel"
Lesson 11: Learn the flat sign.
Lesson 12: Keep practicing the flat sign.
Lesson 13: Learn the sharp sign. Play the "Can-Can."
Lesson 14: Keep practicing the flat sign.
Lesson 15: Play "Simple Gifts"
Lesson 16: Review concepts learned so far including sharps and flats.
