Do you love Science? In this Ongoing Class, learners will explore a range of Science subjects in a fun and interactive way. This course aims to provide meaningful learning experiences for young explorers. Each class will include a range of teaching methods and activities that are designed to engage the learners in both a hands-on and minds-on way. Classes will include experiments, Q&A, quizzes, games, worksheets, videos and much more. Some classes will include breakout rooms. Learners will be encouraged to observe, explore, question and share what they learn. A variety of methods are used to support learners and cater for different learning styles and needs. What is taught in this course? Week of 1/4/24 - What is Materials Science? - materials science as the study of the properties and applications of materials Week of 8/4/24 - What is Materials Science? - basic material properties, such as hardness, strength, and conductivity Week of 15/4/24 - What is Materials Science? - Materials identification activity: exploring and categorizing different materials based on their properties Week of 22/4/24 - Properties of Metals - metallic materials, including properties such as ductility, malleability, and conductivity Week of 29/4/24 - Properties of Metals - metal alloys and their applications in industry Week of 6/5/24 - Properties of Metals - Metal casting: melting and casting metals Week of 13/5/24 - Properties of Polymers - polymer materials, including properties such as flexibility, durability, and thermal stability Week of 20/5/24 - Properties of Polymers - polymerization processes and polymer structures Week of 27/5/24 - Properties of Polymers - Polymer synthesis activity: experimenting with polymerization reactions to create different polymers Week of 3/6/24 - Properties of Ceramics - ceramic materials, including properties such as hardness, brittleness, and thermal resistance Week of 10/6/24 - Properties of Ceramics - ceramic structures and their applications in engineering and pottery Week of 17/6/24 - Properties of Ceramics - Ceramic glazing and firing activity: decorating and firing ceramic objects Week of 24/6/24 - Properties of Composites - composite materials, including properties such as strength, stiffness, and lightness Week of 1/7/24 - Properties of Composites - composite structures and their applications in aerospace, sports equipment, and construction Week of 8/7/24 - Properties of Composites - Composite fabrication activity: creating composite materials using different reinforcement fibers and matrices Week of 15/7/24 - Material Testing and Characterization - material testing techniques, including tensile testing, hardness testing, and microscopy Week of 22/7/24 - Material Testing and Characterization - material characterization methods, such as X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy Week of 29/7/24 - Material Testing and Characterization - Material testing lab activity: conducting experiments to measure material properties Week of 5/8/24 - Biomaterials - biomaterials, including properties such as biocompatibility, bioactivity, and degradation Week of 12/8/24 - Biomaterials - applications of biomaterials in medicine, including implants, scaffolds, and drug delivery systems. Week of 19/8/24 - Biomaterials - Biopolymer extraction activity: extracting and analyzing biomaterials from natural sources Week of 26/8/24 - Nanomaterials - nanomaterials, including properties such as size-dependent properties, quantum effects, and surface area Week of 2/9/24 - Nanomaterials - nanomaterial applications in electronics, medicine, and environmental remediation Week of 9/9/24 - Nanomaterials - Nanoparticle synthesis activity: synthesizing and characterizing nanoparticles using chemical methods Week of 16/9/24 - Smart Materials - smart materials, including properties such as responsiveness, adaptability, and self-healing Week of 23/9/24 - Smart Materials - shape memory alloys, piezoelectric materials, and liquid crystals Week of 30/9/24 - Smart Materials - Smart material demonstration activity: observing and testing the properties of different smart materials Week of 7/10/24 - Sustainable Materials - sustainable materials, including properties such as recyclability, biodegradability, and renewable sourcing Week of 14/10/24 - Sustainable Materials - sustainable material alternatives to traditional materials Week of 21/10/24 - Sustainable Materials - Sustainable material design challenge: designing and prototyping a product using sustainable materials We look forward to being part of your learning journey!
