課堂經歷
Learning to embroider increases hand sewing and fine motor skills, while allowing us to paint with thread. Embroidery is a fun way to embellish your sewing projects! In this intermediate sewing club, students learn and practice a new embroidery stitch every week, and have sewing show-and-tell. We spend time sharing, learning, sewing, and chatting. Intermediate sewing club requires prior experience with sewing, including threading a needle and making a basic stitch. When you enroll, I share our embroidery materials list, a printable Heart Sampler Pattern, and directions on how to transfer the pattern to your fabric. Using the Heart Sampler Pattern is optional, as you may bring anything on which to embroider! I suggest preparing for this embroidery club by transferring a pattern to your fabric before class, or by bringing your own project. Topic Calendar: July 4-8: Satin Stitch July 11-15: Cross Stitch July 18-22: Chain Stitch July 25-29: Stem Stitch August 1-5: Herringbone Stitch August 8-12: Blanket Stitch August 15-19: Feather Stitch August 22-26: Running Stitch and Back Stitch What to Expect in Each Class: Club meetings begin with introductions and greetings, and time for everyone to share their sewing projects. Sewing show-and-tell is the learner's opportunity to share their sewing projects. Then we learn an embroidery stitch, practice it together, and add it to our heart sampler or other embroidery project. As we sew together, learners converse and share their work. During class, I use two cameras. The second camera is above my workspace so my hands and sewing are clearly visible. I pace the stitching for the students following along, and offer variations for different ability levels. Class wraps up with sharing time and goodbyes. How Learners Will Interact: Sewing show-and-tell at the beginning of class is the student sewist's spotlight! Each week’s meeting features lots of student discussion while we sew. Share time at the end of class gives each student an opportunity to share their work. After class, learners may interact with one another by posting pictures of their projects, and commenting on classmates’ works in our classroom. I share a Positive Critique technique that gives students an easy way to talk with others about their projects. My Teaching Style: I am a compassionate teacher and I respect student artists’ varying skill levels and communication preferences. Learners may choose to engage in discussions, respond using chat, and/or share their artworks. Learners are encouraged to communicate in a way that is best for them. Art is all about individual expression!

Because sewing involves sharp needles and scissors, I suggest an adult is nearby while students are sewing.

Hi! I'm Ms. Karen and I teach sewing, drawing and painting here on Outschool.
I have a BA in Studio Art, and a current teaching certificate in Visual Arts and in Gifted Education. I have taught art in public and private schools from Pre-K to 12th grade for 20 years. Now, I teach on Outschool, and host paint parties!
Through my calm and positive instructional style, I encourage artists to engage in art making and trust their own ideas. I model being okay with making mistakes (they are a natural part of learning), trying new things, and sharing ideas. Including each learner in class discussion is important to me, because I want every learner who is in one of my classes to feel important and included.
I use two cameras to teach: one for my face, and one over my work space. Because students have a good view of what I am doing, it is easier for them to create!
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy my big animal family! My husband and I have 3 cats and 2 dogs. Amazingly, they all get along. I like kayaking in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia where I live. I find observing nature endlessly fascinating, and enjoy seeing bald eagles, osprey and herons regularly.
One of the most interesting events in my life was when I spent time with the artist Christo at a dinner party. Talking with him was fascinating! He had so many stories of traveling and adventure to share.
