課堂經歷
Thinking logically is an essential problem solving skill, and one of the most fun ways to strengthen that type of thinking is through puzzles! There are so many fun puzzles to learn and students will learn a variety of them through this course. Each week in this ongoing class, students will engage in solving one type of logic puzzle. At the beginning of class, students will learn the rules of solving the specific puzzle, and then will work cooperatively to solve it. I will facilitate solving by providing strategies and assistance, when needed. Here is the sequence of puzzles with class on April 17th being Week 1: -Week 1: Sudoku (using digits 1-9 to complete a grid, no math required) -Week 2: Binox (complete a grid using Xs and Os) -Week 3: Suguru (using digits 1-5 to complete cages, no math required) -Week 4: Star Battles (placing stars within a grid) -Week 5: Battle Ships (solitaire version of popular board game - use clues to determine the location of different ships) -Week 6: Tents and Trees (place tents and trees within a grid) -Week 7: Nonograms (use clues to make pictures within a grid) -Week 8: Kakuro (simple addition and logic are used to solve a math "crossword" puzzle) -Week 9: KenKen - two operations (also known as Mathdoku - logic combined with simple addition and subtraction) -Week 10: KenKen - four operations (also known as Mathdoku - logic combined with simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) -Week 11: Akari (or Light Up - place lightbulbs on a grid using number clues to illuminate all empty grid squares) -Week 12: Verbal Logic Problems (using a grid to solve) -Week 13: Wordle (figure out a 5-letter words based on clues from your previous guesses) After that, learners will select other puzzles they'd like to learn or we will revisit a type of puzzle again. *Note: Learners will interact with the puzzles using Google Jamboard. Being logged into Google Chrome makes it function better, and if your learner is working on a tablet, downloading the Jamboard app (for free) with make the interaction more smooth. **Note: Jamboard is a great way for learners to work together to solve puzzles, but if learners are using the tools in a way that is distracting to other learners, I will have no choice but to remove them from the meeting so that class can continue without disruption.

馬裡蘭州 教學證書 在 小學教育
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.
Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.
When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
