課堂經歷
Join us for a hands-on course where we’ll utilize engaging hands-on activities with Legos to provide participants with a strong addition foundation. Addition concepts start to form long before children learn to add in school. When they begin to put things together into like and unlike sets, children are beginning to develop the basic idea of addition. Students need to learn more than simply the procedures for adding; they must understand the why and how behind the process as well. A firm...
20 lessons//10 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1What does it mean to add?Students will learn/discover: • The definition of addition • What it means to add two numbers • How to combine setsLesson 2What does it mean to add?Students will learn/discover: • The definition of addition • What it means to add two numbers • How to combine setsWeek 2Lesson 3How Many Ways?Students will learn/discover: • How to use multiple statements to find the same sum Being able to model sums using various addend combinations helps students develop a form base for mental math, fact recognition, and number relationships.Lesson 4How Many Ways?Students will learn/discover: • How to use multiple statements to find the same sum Being able to model sums using various addend combinations helps students develop a form base for mental math, fact recognition, and number relationships.Week 3Lesson 5Ten Frames Addition Within TwentyStudents will learn/discover: • How to add within 20 Adding numbers within 20 combines early number skill such as one-to-one correspondence with the joining of values into one set. This fosters the ability to use mental math later with regard to sets of 10.Lesson 6Ten Frames Addition Within TwentyStudents will learn/discover: • How to add within 20 Adding numbers within 20 combines early number skill such as one-to-one correspondence with the joining of values into one set. This fosters the ability to use mental math later with regard to sets of 10.Week 4Lesson 7Place Value AdditionStudents will learn/discover: • How to model addition problems using place values of ones, tens, and hundreds Being able to model numbers in the context of ones, tens, and hundreds helps students understand the importance of place value in computation and mental math. This skill is also important as students begin to add larger numbers in the base ten system.Lesson 8Place Value AdditionStudents will learn/discover: • How to model addition problems using place values of ones, tens, and hundreds Being able to model numbers in the context of ones, tens, and hundreds helps students understand the importance of place value in computation and mental math. This skill is also important as students begin to add larger numbers in the base ten system.Week 5Lesson 9Decomposing NumbersStudents will learn/discover: • How to add numbers up to the sum of 20 using decomposing within 20 Adding numbers up to the sum of 20 using the method of decomposing numbers in place value is key with larger numbers, up to the millions, in upper elementary grades. Linking place value to addition and decomposing numbers is important in understanding the way addition is related to other operations.Lesson 10Decomposing NumbersStudents will learn/discover: • How to add numbers up to the sum of 20 using decomposing within 20 Adding numbers up to the sum of 20 using the method of decomposing numbers in place value is key with larger numbers, up to the millions, in upper elementary grades. Linking place value to addition and decomposing numbers is important in understanding the way addition is related to other operations.Week 6Lesson 11Decomposing NumbersStudents will learn/discover: • How to add numbers up to the sum of 20 using decomposing within 20 Adding numbers up to the sum of 20 using the method of decomposing numbers in place value is key with larger numbers, up to the millions, in upper elementary grades. Linking place value to addition and decomposing numbers is important in understanding the way addition is related to other operations.Lesson 12Decomposing NumbersStudents will learn/discover: • How to add numbers up to the sum of 20 using decomposing within 20 Adding numbers up to the sum of 20 using the method of decomposing numbers in place value is key with larger numbers, up to the millions, in upper elementary grades. Linking place value to addition and decomposing numbers is important in understanding the way addition is related to other operations.Week 7Lesson 13Result Unkown ProblemsStudents will learn/discover: • How to use a model to find the missing sum in a problem Being able to model numbers helps students formulate an understanding for number recognition. Ten-frames provide a base for seeing more than and less than ten, which helps build conceptual understanding about addition and subtraction.Lesson 14Result Unkown ProblemsStudents will learn/discover: • How to use a model to find the missing sum in a problem Being able to model numbers helps students formulate an understanding for number recognition. Ten-frames provide a base for seeing more than and less than ten, which helps build conceptual understanding about addition and subtraction.Week 8Lesson 15Change Unknown ProblemsStudents will learn/discover: • How to model problems with a missing addend in the change location, which is the second addend or value in the problem. Modeling problems with missing addends in different locations helps students understand the part-part-whole relationships between numbers. In the change unknown problem, students find the missing addend through a variety of strategies.Lesson 16Change Unknown ProblemsStudents will learn/discover: • How to model problems with a missing addend in the change location, which is the second addend or value in the problem. Modeling problems with missing addends in different locations helps students understand the part-part-whole relationships between numbers. In the change unknown problem, students find the missing addend through a variety of strategies.Week 9Lesson 17Start Unknown ProblemsStudents will learn/discover: • How to solve problems where the starting number in the problem is unknown Being able to model different types of addition problems is key to understanding what strategies are best to utilize when solving each type.Lesson 18Start Unknown ProblemsStudents will learn/discover: • How to solve problems where the starting number in the problem is unknown Being able to model different types of addition problems is key to understanding what strategies are best to utilize when solving each type.Week 10Lesson 19Adding Large NumbersStudents will learn/discover: • How to add numbers to sums within 100 using a place value method Being able to add numbers that are sums within 100 begins the process of adding even larger numbers. Linking place value to addition and decomposing numbers is key to understanding the way addition is related to other operations.Lesson 20Adding Large NumbersStudents will learn/discover: • How to add numbers to sums within 100 using a place value method Being able to add numbers that are sums within 100 begins the process of adding even larger numbers. Linking place value to addition and decomposing numbers is key to understanding the way addition is related to other operations.
- Participants in this class will build a strong foundation of mathematical concepts that will be essential for their growth in this subject area.

Assessment
頻率: 包括細節: Parents may request evaluation feedback on learner participation and demonstration of understanding. These points will be evaluated through class participation.
To successfully participate in class, learners will need a student workbook to utilize throughout the semester. Parents have the option to purchase the book printed or purchase a PDF download and print it at home. Printed workbook: https://www.brickmathseries.com/store/p20/addition-student.html PDF workbook to be printed at home: https://www.brickmathseries.com/store/p21/Addition_Using_LEGO%C2%AE_Bricks%E2%80%94Student_Edition_%28PDF%29.html Learners will need an assortment of bricks each week in class. Brick Math sells a kit that is complete with the full variety of options needed for the activities in class. There’s an option to purchase that here: https://www.brickmathseries.com/store/p17/brick-set.html However, we will also let you know weekly which bricks we’ll be using in class, so your learner can pull from their current stash if that’s preferred. All learners will need a baseplate for their work surface. If you purchase the kit, it will come with it. If you plan to use bricks from home, please ensure you have a baseplate that is at least 6”x6”. Something like this is ideal: https://a.co/d/bj0PJZv
