This interactive class will introduce students to 3-4 sight words a week. We will read stories with weekly sight words. We will also practice writing, reading, and making short vowel words and CVC words. We will review letter sounds and practice using these sounds to spell new words. During these lessons, your child will have an opportunity to read, write, and learn beginning reading strategies. Students will have plenty of opportunities to participate. I have over 20 years of experience teaching new and struggling readers. Please note: *** These classes are 25 minutes but sometimes run longer (30 minutes) if there are more students. ***This class will focus on reading levels A-C. These books are primary patterned texts to learn directionality, one-to-one matching (voice to print), initial letter sounds, and sight word repetition. *** Levels A-C are on an approximate Kindergarten level. Levels D-J are approximately 1st-grade levels. *** If you are unsure of your child's approximate reading level, I have a "What Is My Reading Level?" course that I can set up for your child. My name is Ms. Shannon, and I am so thrilled to be a teacher on Outschool.
My Courses:
I offer various classes including, but not limited to:
First Grade Reading, Kindergarten Reading, Phonics, Sight Words, Beginning Writing, and Private Tutoring. I also offer private reading assessments and tutoring 1:1. I can help you determine what level your child is reading on and help you create a plan for progress. If you don't see an active class available, feel free to reach out and request a time.
My Professional Background:
I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from UNCW in 1996. I am a licensed teacher in the areas of Early Childhood (ages 3-8), Elementary Education (ages 8-12), and a Reading Specialist. I also hold an NBCT (National Board Certified Teacher) license and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate. I have over 25 years of teaching experience and have been teaching online since 2020.
I currently homeschool two of my three children and work from home.
My Teaching Philosophy:
I believe meeting a student where they are is essential to help them learn successfully. I offer a differentiated style to allow all learners an opportunity to participate. I believe in a multi-sensory approach to learning. I want all children to love reading and learning in general. I am passionate about children gaining confidence in their abilities and feeling successful.
