作業
每週 1-2 小時. After each class I will set a small list of things to try on your own at home before the next session. This will allow you to recap on what we learnt in that session. You will also be able to add new features to your game, or expand on what we learnt in that days class to take your learning to a deeper level. If you can't complete any part of the homework then no problem, I walk you through a solution at the start of the next session... nobody gets left behind.
評估
Each learner will be able to self-assess by looking at the quality of the game they have written, and the ease at which they can add new features to it. There will be options at the end to show their game to the rest of the class should they want to, and I will be able to see each learners screen at intervals to ensure they are keeping up with the work. I encourage all learners to show their families what they have created as we go along, to let their family play their game, to gain feedback from their families on what they like about their game and how it could be improved etc. Being able to show your game to someone helps greatly with the learning process.

Learn how to design, program, edit, and create your own computer games, even if you have no knowledge of games design, graphics, or of creating sound effects. Then learn how to upload it to an online games store for it to be played by gamers worldwide.

This course is led by a programmer and teacher who has decades of experience in teaching games design, and of delivering programming, computing, and technical skills to young learners. I am a teacher of computer science in the UK and a teacher trainer for computer science teachers. I am not only a teacher, I have been the owner of my own very successful software company since 1985.

In this course you will learn the basics of creating players, enemies, levels, traps, secret doors and adding sound. Then we move on to adding your own features and gameplay. This course will lead you from being an absolute beginner, to being a games designer able to make games your family and friends will want to play.

I choose the first game we write, I show each step of the process, and then wait for you to follow it in your game before I move on. If anything doesn't work in your game, and you can't fix it, then I can take a look and find the fault for you should need me to. Nobody gets left behind on this course and all students gain the confidence to add to or improve their game between sessions.

No graphics or drawing ability is needed. I supply the graphics needed for the course, and show you how to easily create your own using the built in graphics editor. You will also learn where to go to online to get free graphics and sounds that make your games look, and sound, more professional. I even show you online programs to automatically create your own custom sound effects.

We start with simple drag and drop actions, its so easy anyone can do it. Later on you will gradually learn to write some code but its no more that a few lines where needed, and anything complicated is kept to a minimum. The main focus of this course is on learning games design, and of the games design environment.

You will need a copy of Gamemaker Studio (which can be downloaded free of charge), the only other thing you need is a desire to create games.

Session Breakdown:
The sessions are based on the following, with some additional features added from suggestions made by individual students. This makes the class more dynamic and interactive (rather than just one sided tuition where you have to follow exactly what I do with no deviation).

Session 1: Introduction to the Gamemaker Interface and games design programming. Programming character movement. Editing and using graphics. Playing and testing your game. Character Collisions.

Session 2: Collecting items. Enhanced movement. Adding sound, special effects, and new features to your game.

Session 3: Programming Enemies, and adding extra levels to your game. Moving between levels, testing games.

Session 4: Adding extra features (some suggested by students) such as cheats, hidden doors, extra firing effects. Improving enemy logic.

Session 5: Polishing your game, adding custom features , Publishing and selling your game. Where to go from here. Using your skills to move on to professional programming languages. Using exciting new features in the free version of Gamemaker to allow your game to get out to a wide audience at no cost.

Please remember, the above is only a subset of the skills and features we cover, because although I have a specific game which takes the five sessions to complete, I take in to account students ideas and add many of those features as we go along, I answer questions and show how students ideas can be easily be implemented in their games.

學習目標

At the end of the course you will have created a game by following my lead. I have chosen this specific game because it allows me to show you all the basic skills you need to know in order for you to be able to write other games on your own after the course is over.

You will learn how to create players and enemies, and program them to move under keyboard control, or on their own.

You will learn how to create objects to collect, how to fire bullets, create sound effects, create special effects such as explosions or smoke, design rooms or levels for your game, create secret cheat modes, secret doors and much more.

I will show you how you can showcase your games on an online marketplace with just a few clicks of the mouse and let you know where you can progress to after the course.

父母的引導和規範
There is nothing mature, or sensitive, about any of the content in this class, younger learners could be supervised by an adult to ensure they can log in to download and install Gamemaker prior to the class starting. Please check out the class description for more information. I often find younger learners don't know where files are stored on their computer, so help from the parent can be useful to show them how to install Gamemaker and where to save files on their computer. Once they have those two they will be able to follow my instruction unaided.
供應清單
For this course learners will need to download the free version of Gamemaker Studio from gamemaker.io as listed above and install it on your computer before the class starts.

The software is free to use for as long as you like. You can make as many games as you like with it while you are learning.

There is no need to pay for the Gamemaker software, you are free to make as many games as you like, give them to friends, make windows executable games or games that run in a browser. You only have to pay a small fee if you want to sell games commercially. The free version not only lets you make and play as many games as you like, it also lets you publish (at no cost) to an online store to share your game with gamers from around the world.

With Gamemaker Studio you get free updates to the software on a regular basis containing new features and product updates.

For this course I will supply the graphics and sounds we need to follow along. I also will show you where to download your own choice of graphics and sounds you can import directly in to your game. I will also show you which websites to visit to get free, high quality sounds and graphics to make your games look more professional.

I have been a programmer since 1982 and have been running my own very successful software house since 1985.

I am a qualified teacher in the UK. I specialise in computer skills, games design, and computer science. I have been teaching computer subjects for over 30 years to students from primary through to university level, I have trained over 8000 computer science teachers in face to face classes in the UK through my own training company.

I also work for two exam boards in the UK, OCR and AQA, where I deliver training to computing teachers. I also deliver regular webinars to update teachers on changes to computer science exams and procedures. I was the Computing Hub Leader for Lancashire, England, in charge of training computer science teachers for the National Centre for Computer Education, this is the government funded agency to upskill UK computing and computer science teachers.

I have been teaching games design for many years, and I was a beta tester for Gamemaker Studio 2 (used in the course) for a year prior to its release so I am more than familiar with the software.
