Students will practice planning and preparation before undertaking their task. They will also practice cleaning up after themselves. They will learn basic culinary skills such as using an egg wash, proper salt technique, and baking skills. Students may have the opportunity to apply basic math skills such as addition and fractions.
Cooking is a great tool to focus your child’s attention and help them be creative and productive. I also feel that children need and want to learn responsibility. The kitchen is a fun and creative way for your child to practice creativity while learning responsibility. This pot pie is easy enough for your child to make again and it’s a great way for them to share in the family meal or with someone in need. What neighbor wouldn’t love to find a homemade pot pie on their doorstep?

A PDF with ingredients, tools and pre-work is provided upon enrollment. I have also pasted below for your convenience. INGREDIENTS: • 1 Deep Dish Pie Crusts in disposable pie tin (9” Size) • 1 Refrigerated Pie Crusts (9” size “unroll & bake” type to cover the pie) • 1 Can Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup (10 1/2 oz) • 1 package frozen mixed vegetables, thawed (12 oz package of peas, carrots, corn & green bean mix) • 1 can cooked chicken breast (12.5 oz) or 1 cup shredded rotisserie chicken (Optional) • 1 cup frozen diced potatoes or frozen diced sweet potatoes, thawed (Optional) • 3/4 cup milk • 1/2 tsp salt • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese (Optional) • Black Pepper (Optional) • 1 egg (Optional) ALTERNATIVE RECIPES: GLUTEN FREE: Substitute crust for gluten-free crusts; sub condensed soup for 1 can of gluten-free condensed cream of chicken soup or gluten free condensed cream of mushroom soup. VEGETARIAN: Substitute 1 can condensed cream of mushroom in place of cream of chicken; omit chicken. DAIRY-FREE: This recipe is not recommended for dairy-free diets as the condensed cream based soup is a key ingredient. TOOLS: • Oven set at 400°F / 205°C. • Large cutting board or plastic mat to work on (12x15) • 2 mixing bowls; 1 large & 1 small • Rubber spatula/scraper • Culinary brush or damp paper towel • Scissors, small knife & fork • Measuring cups & Measuring Spoons • Kitchen timer, Hot Pads & Cooling rack 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO CLASS: • Remove frozen mixed vegetable and 1 cup frozen potatoes from freezer and allow to thaw • Remove pie crusts from refrigerator (keep inside the plastic wrapping) • Lay out your tools and remaining ingredients for class (don’t worry about turning the oven on yet) • Empty the dishwasher and have it ready to re-load with utensils from class • Open your canned items, drain liquid from chicken

The child will be using the oven and a small knife to trim the pie crust. Depending on the ability of the child, parental assistance may be required. Parental supervision is a necessity, even if the child does not require assistance. Also, the recipe may be modified to be gluten-free, vegetarian, or use a different protein, such as beef instead of chicken. Notes are provided for the appropriate substitution. This class is not recommended for dairy-free diets as the condensed cream based soup is a key ingredient. Most items can be found a your local grocery store or ordered on-line at Amazon.
