課堂經歷
This course will cover the basics of Scratch, including basic game features like character movement and appearance, simple gameplay control, and maintaining game state. This course is designed for students who have not used Scratch before and will lead those students to a place where they can design and share simple games. A heavy emphasis will be placed on giving students simple tools and patterns that can be applied generally and creatively to create the games they have in their heads. I will place an emphasis on peer to peer conversation and so encourage students to enroll with a friend if they prefer and I will ensure that they work together on all partner work.
學習目標
Students will learn basic Scratch functions
Students will learn basic code design
Students will develop understanding of game design concepts like game state

父母的引導和規範
Scratch is a game design platform with many games on it. While none of the games I will introduce will have graphic images, one game depicts is a "tower defense" type game where the player shoots at advancing enemies. Contact me if this is a concern, I can send a link to the game so you can consider whether it is appropriate for your child.
Elsewhere on Scratch there are games with more graphic displays of violence. While they will not be covered in class, I do encourage students to explore Scratch to get ideas for their games and to develop their ability to read code. This exploration could bring them into contact with games like this. Have conversations with them about violence in video games if this is of concern to you - even if they are not exposed to it in this class, I believe that it is impossible for a young person to navigate gaming spaces on the internet and not be exposed to that sort of content.
供應清單
Students should be willing to create a Scratch account, although we can go through the account creation steps on the first day.

教師專業知識和證書
I was a software engineer for four years before transitioning to teaching and am passionate about technical education. I believe that computer science themes and thinking is accessible to students at all ages and is applicable across a range of subjects. I hope to use Scratch, an engaging platform full of amazing games, to allow students to realize that they truly can create what they have in their mind. I believe that the creativity of my students is boundless and I am excited to help them realize that too.
