Your learner and I will meet once a week to craft a research project about any text of their choosing. (If they don't have anything in mind, I can help them locate something!) We will follow a schedule that takes about 12 weeks, but this can be adapted (extended OR truncated) to accommodate any learner or schedule. - Students will learn how to schedule their time appropriately and set achievable goals.
- Students will improve their close reading skills by using dialogic journals.
- Students will learn to craft a thesis and support their argument(s) with details from the text and quotes from scholarly sources.
- Students will learn how to cite their sources, format their project, and edit effectively.
- Students will sharpen their critical thinking skills by examining different perspectives on a topic, seeking out expert opinions, and evaluating arguments without falling prey to logical fallacies.
I received my M.A. in English Literature from NAU in 2023, graduating with distinction. I was our Sigma Tau Delta chapter's president from 2022-2023. I have presented multiple papers at national conferences & am currently the co-editor for an essay collection under contract with an academic press.

Learner will select their own text - this can be something they already have in their home library, something they check out from a local library, a book they buy, or a text that we find available online (such as with texts now out of copyright).
Learners have freedom in this course to select a text that speaks to them. This may be a relatively "light" text with 0 content warnings whatsoever, or it may be one that includes upsetting scenarios. For my part, I will not be suggesting any books with overtly sexual or violent content. I will of course veto books/texts that are purely pornographic, sadistic, or otherwise too disturbing for young adults - but I don't anticipate that being an issue.
