課堂經歷
Each weekly session we will focus on one black visual artist who has made significant contributions to art. I will show the students how to create colorful, mixed media, collage portraits (abstract/realistic) that will highlight the artist, his/her work and life. Students will paint backgrounds with acrylic paint. They will layer the painting with torn paper, a photo/clipart (print out provided) of the featured artist, found objects, 3-D paint and at least one printed quotes. Students are encouraged to bring more elements for added texture such as rhinestones, buttons, yarn, fabric, ribbon and newspaper/magazine clippings. The collage technique we will be using is simple in execution, therefore students will not have to know how to draw in order to produce beautiful, powerful, artistic pieces. We will apply this same mixed-media collage technique to each canvas. Consequently, students will grow in their artistic expression across all four paintings. While we create and wait for paint to dry, I will share some interesting facts about the featured artist. We will explore information available about their lives. I will show pictures of the artist work and encourage students to critique and learn art terminology. All the information will be age-appropriate with the aim of honoring the person’s artistry and whetting the students' appetites for learning about art history. When available, I will show Youtube videos in class featuring the artist’s work and life. Session 1- Clementine Hunter Camp attendees will learn how to make a mixed media, collage, painting featuring Clementine Hunter, a self-taught folk artists who became famous for depicting Black life in the south. Session 2- Romare Bearden Camp attendees will learn how to make a mixed media, collage, painting featuring Romare Bearden who became known for his vibrant collages depicting black life. 教師專業知識和證書
I present my historical information on my lived experience as an African-American in the United States of America coupled with my masters degree in social work which has allowed me to study the affects of historical events and laws in the United States of America on its citizens. My masters degree has also trained me to handle and manage difficult situations, sensitive information and empower marginalized groups in America. Because of my passion for history, educating young minds and accuracy, I spend hours on researching and crafting each class that I offer and work hard to represent marginalized voices in my classes.
I have also taken undergraduate courses in African-American history under expert professors. I have over 10 years of teaching in and outside of the the traditional classroom. I have 10 years of professional experience working with primarily African-American youth in foster care which equipped me to handle delicate matters with professionalism and tact. Cumulatively, I possess over twenty years of experience working with and teaching youth of all ages. I have worked as a childcare worker, case manager, teacher, homeschool parent and have volunteered many hours in children's programs. I am also an avid crafter with sewing skills. All of these qualifications have lended themselves to me successfully teaching African-American history on Outschool with excellent reviews from parents and consistent 5-star ratings.
