Access to the following books: The Women’s March by Jennifer Chiaverini The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne (see important note please) The Baker’s Secret by Stephen P. Kiernan The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah IMPORTANT Notes: "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" will be taught. This book contains many historical inaccuracies. The book has been denounced by many Jewish organizations. Our purpose in reading this book is to examine its flaws, not to absorb it as a historical account. We would prefer it if you purchased the book used or borrowed it from the library to avoid funding the authors misinformation. Most of our books are NOT young adult books. They are adult historical fiction novels that many educators utilize and are largely clean for teen consumption. There may be an illusion to a relationship, but not graphic romance. There may be minor language that suits the story, but not extreme profanity. Physical books, eBooks, and audiobooks are all equal in the eyes of Hub of Curiosity. Whatever format your learner prefers is the one they should happily read!! Access to the following movies: Suffragette Cinderella Man SeaBiscuit Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken The Imitation Game Midway A Call to Spy The Monuments Men The Book Thief The Pianist The Zookeeper’s Wife Life is Beautiful *** Please review Common Sense Media to ensure the movies meet your family’s viewing standards. If there’s a particular movie that you do not feel is a good fit for your learner, feel free to skip it. It will make up a portion of the Trivia and Games section for that week, but your child can still participate in other aspects of the trivia and games. Participants will be cooking in weeks 6-8 and 13-16. A list of ingredients we will be using is below for review. However, we will provide a detailed breakdown by week and recipe in the classroom for unit/theme. Ingredients: Ground meat, onion, can of tomato soup, cabbage, rice, shortening, sugar, eggs, baking powder, corn meal, milk, apples, butter, flour, vanilla extract, soup bone, dry pea beans, tomatoes, celery, potatoes, basil, light brown sugar, sour cream, orange and orange juice, honey, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg, carrots, raisins, nuts (can easily be omitted for allergies), oats, molasses, vanilla ice cream, blueberries or huckleberries, salt, and pepper. We are quite skilled at assisting with allergy substitutions. Please feel free to inquire and we’ll be happy to help! During weeks 9-12, participants will need yarn and a crochet hook for our “war relief effort” project. In the month prior, Susan will discuss yarn types, hook sizes, and more to ensure learners are prepared for that activity.
Naturally discussion of the Great Depression and World War II will include heavy topics. All of the materials that will be used in this course are listed in the Supply List section for your review to ensure the content meets your family’s standards for your child(ren). Susan is a homeschool mother of 6 with a number of successful graduates. She’s very skilled at tailoring content to an age-appropriate level. "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" will be taught.
