This movie is rated PG-13, so it may be deemed unsuitable for some of the younger students. In this 8 week class, we will examine his childhood, education and influences, law and political careers, challenges he faced before and during the Civil War, decisions and speeches that he made, and the legacy that he left behind. In this class, we will explore the life and contributions of Abraham Lincoln. We will take a look at his childhood, education, his beginnings in politics, some of his powerful speeches, and the Civil War. There will be 7 homework assignments given in this class. In lesson 7, the homework assignment will be to watch the movie “Lincoln” at home on the students own time. This movie is rated PG-13, so it may be deemed unsuitable for some of the younger students. Week 1 – His childhood and education Week 2 – Illinois Legislature, the Whig Party, becoming a Republican Week 3 – Mary Todd and their family Week 4 – Becoming a lawyer and congressman. The “House Divided” speech Week 5 – Elected 16th president; the beginning of the Civil War Week 6 – Emancipation Proclamation; the Gettysburg Address; the Homestead Act Week 7 – The state of the country during and after his presidency Week 8 – Lincoln's death and details about the movie “Lincoln” Each week, by Wednesday evening (9pm PST) - -I will email each student a link that weeks lecture and assignments. This will be on YouTube and is in a private account that is embedded into the Outschool classroom page. - Assignments will consist of discussion and essay questions, short research topics, Youtube videos, and worksheets. These will be posted on the classroom page. - In my flex classes, each family can determine the level of participation in the course. - Communication will be done through the Outschool classroom. -I will check in with each student several times during the week to check on progress of the homework, address any questions, or to engage in a discussion about the topic covered. Each student is encouraged to message (through the Outschool classroom) me anytime they have any questions or thoughts about the class. - Each week, there may be additional articles, videos, or pictures that will be posted to the classroom page to engage students in open conversations about that weeks topic. -Please message me before the start of class if you have any questions. The homework assignment for week 7 is to watch the movie "Lincoln" at home on the students own time. (This is available on Netflix.) Some students may find some of the topics covered or scenes a bit disturbing. Please be aware that the last class (week 8) is a lecture about the movie, the characters, and what outcome the situations in the movie had on history. We will also be discussing slavery, war, and Lincoln's assassination. All topics will be handled in an age appropriate manner.
This class will utilize Youtube videos for sharing of lecture videos, as well as supplemental lessons. All Youtube videos are embedded into the Outschool platform. This class may also utilize Kahoot. Learners will be given a direct link and game pin to play.

Each week, a list of homework questions will be posted to the classroom page. There will also be a list of 2-5 research/project topics that the student will choose from for that week. Both of these are due on the Saturday of that week. Students will have to do research on their own time. I will be available for questions 24-7.
