In this ongoing class, students will learn about a new animal each week while they get the chance to practice their grammar skills. Once your student has been introduced to basic grammar concepts, it is always beneficial to practice them within the context of written information. As we read some interesting animal facts, we will break down sentences according to grammar principles so learners can actually see how these concepts connect with each other. Each class will cover 1 - 2 grammar concepts including topics like singular and plural nouns, adjectives, action verbs, helping verbs, linking verbs, contractions, adverbs, prepositions, prepositional phrases, conjunctions, interjections, pronouns, capitalization, and more. I will send grammar notes each week to the classroom as well as an activity page. Bringing fun animals into the grammar classroom is sure to stimulate interest and engagement with students. Each class is totally independent of the others, so learners are free to come and go as they please. I do recommend that students already have a basic knowledge of 2nd grade grammar concepts. If you need help in this area, I suggest checking out my other classes: Smoky Mountains Grammar and The Great Grammar Adventure. Before each class I will send any pertinent notes to the classroom for your STUDENT TO REVIEW BEFORE CLASS. We won't go over the grammar notes in class but will use them as we work with the sentences. **PLEASE CHECK THE CLASSROOM EACH WEEK BEFORE CLASS so you can print off the grammar notes. I teach my classes uses colorful Google slides that I create. Interaction with my students is critical as I help them to succeed no matter what level they are at. Topics: Week #1 - hedgehogs, nouns, pronouns Week #2 - sloths, adjectives, sentence types Week #3 - wombats, prepositional phrases Week #4 - shoebill stork, verbs Week #5 - okapis, subjects and predicates Week #6 - emperor tamarins, synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms Week #7 - markhors, capitalization Week #8 - kinkajous, adverbs

Howdy from East Tennessee! I’m Shelley Greaney, and I love teaching on Outschool. I earned my bachelor’s degree at Texas A&M University, majoring in journalism with a minor in English. I'm a mother of six, grandmother of five, and I home schooled all of my children for a total of 26 years. I began teaching online five years ago as an ESL teacher and then started nutrition and grammar classes on Outschool. I also taught as a volunteer for elementary-aged children for ten years.
As a true grammar nerd, I offer foundational grammar classes for grades one, two, and three. The Great Grammar Adventure, a 29-week ongoing class, covers over a semester’s worth of grammar topics with two writing units, as well. I'm always looking for ways to make grammar more interesting for students.
I also teach First Grade Curriculum for K-1st graders. This class meets three times per week and covers a variety of topics including phonics, math, language arts, telling time on an analog clock, reading a calendar, social skills, and so much more. Students enjoy a new theme every week, worksheets to reinforce what we learn in class, and Show & Tell at the end of every class.
I believe learning should always be engaging, fun, and practical, and I work very hard to make sure each student, regardless of level, feels successful in class. I incorporate fun-themed slides, open-ended questions, scaffolding, and discussion to keep kids interested and engaged in class. I believe in letting kids share and participate in class, while maintaining an organized learning atmosphere. Lots of smiles and laughter are welcome in my classroom every day.
