The focus of "Grade 2: Reading Comprehension & Fluency" is to teach students to analyze, evaluate, and think critically about a given text. Students will learn key comprehension skills and strategies necessary for reading success in order to better understand what they read.

Learners will be guided in using close reading skills to find layers of meaning in a text. Close Reading is an instructional routine requiring students to look critically at a short, complex text, reading the same text multiple times, and answering text dependent questions to deepen understanding.

Students need direct and explicit instruction to know when and how comprehension skills and strategies should be used. This class provides students with opportunities for repeated practice until these skills become automatic, creating strategic, adaptable readers who can build meaning from text.

HOW WILL CLASS BE TAUGHT?

This is an interactive class, with a lot of student engagement. Learners will practice reading aloud (fluency), learn new vocabulary (context clues practice), reading comprehension skills/strategies such as: main idea, key details, character analysis, author's purpose, inferencing and more! Students will enjoy fiction and nonfiction reading passages, taught as follows:

         1. Teacher Model: Model the Comprehension Skill using a projectable passage.

         2. Guided Practice & Discussion: Students will take turns reading the passage aloud working together to discuss and practice the newly taught skill using a related reading passage.

         3. Independent Practice: Students move on to the Independent Practice Passages that focus on the same comprehension skill to work on their own, with support from Mrs. Tash as needed.

All learners will be assisted with pronunciation and fluency, as needed. The reading materials provided in class are Grade 2 Reading Level. This class is good for:

         - 1st grade advanced readers
         - 2nd grade readers
         - 3rd/4th graders that are still struggling

WHAT IS CRITICAL THINKING?

Critical thinking is a term used to describe forms of learning, thought, and analysis that go beyond the memorization and recall
of information and facts. Critical thinking happens when children draw on their existing knowledge and experience, as well as
on their problem-solving skills, to do things like:

        - Compare and contrast
        - Explain why things happen
        - Evaluate ideas and form opinions
        - Understand the perspectives of others
        - Predict what will happen in the future
        - Think of creative solutions

WHY IS CRITICAL THINKING SO IMPORTANT?

Critical thinking is a fundamental skill for both language and literacy success.

Language − As children engage in critical thinking, their language skills expand because they’re encouraged to develop and
use more complex language with words like “because”, “if”, “then” and different verb tenses. As children’s language
development progresses, their ability to think critically grows as well.

Literacy − To truly understand the meaning of a book, children must be able to do more than sound out letters and words. They
must also “read between the lines” to figure things out that are not actually stated in the book. To do this, they must use critical
thinking skills like problem-solving, predicting and explaining. Encouraging this kind of thinking early in a child’s life prepares
them to understand the books they'll read on their own later on.
