Join this class to build community in a small group while making friends and learning spelling, phonics. Each qualified educator brings unique gifts and talents to share with your learner, but they are all fun, energetic, and engaging. 

In this class, students will have classes on spelling, writing, and phonics, 2 times a week. This class runs a total of 16weeks. 

The schedule will be as follows: 

Tuesdays: Spelling with Teacher Kathy
Thursdays: Phonics with Teacher Kathy

Spelling: In this class students will be learning a list of words, practicing reading, writing and spelling them. I believe that student will retain how to spell words in the English language, but using these these methods and practice daily. This class will be a weekly spelling lesson with different list words each week for the grade 1 level. Students will in class learn how to say each word, how to spell each word and complete an activity to help understand the definition of each of these spelling list words. At the end of class we will play an interactive game online using either nearpod.com, kahoot.it, or blooket.com, with that week's list words for students to get further practice with each word from that week’s list. Students are encouraged to have another device (computer, tablet, phone) to play this game on so they are able to see the teachers screen with the scores and the game on their other device. Students are required to bring paper and pencil to each class so they are able to write down each list word one time. Class will start on time, so please be on time, or you will miss the list words for this week. List words are only given at the beginning of each class, they will not be given ahead of time. This eliminates the issue of some students not having a printer, didn’t see the post with the words, and or didn’t practice. This allows each student to start at the same spot at the beginning of each class.

After class, the teacher will post in the classroom an attachment with a worksheet with that week's spelling words, and a link and code for the game on nearpod.com/kahoot.it with that week's list words for the student to use to practice throughout the week. Students are encouraged to practice the words during the week because this will improve their spelling skills and help them be better prepared for the following weeks list.

Phonics: 
In this  class students will learn the beginning phonetic sounds of the alphabet to prepare them to read. Students will complete activities and games together using nearpod.com incorporating the letters sounds learned in that class. The website for games used will be nearpod.com.  Instructions on how to play this game will be given in class. 
Parents are encouraged to be nearby for help with their student as needed.
