課堂經歷

This is a gaming group that operates off of Valve's Steam platform. Students will pick up and develop practical skills here to help navigate within the world of gaming as a life enhancing activity. Learners will be guided by not only an experienced gamer, but a scholar heavily versed in ancient and classical literature from authors like Hesiod, Homer, Xenophon, Plato, Marcus Aurelius, Chaucer, and Shakespeare. Playing video games builds grey matter, a major component of the central nervous system that helps with muscle control, perception, spatial navigation, memory, and pretty much all aspects of human life: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK553239/ There are several medical journal studies pointing to these findings:

This class will require the Steam client downloaded onto the participant's computer or possession of a Steam Deck.

Q: What is Valve's Steam?
A: Steam is a video game digital distribution service and storefront by a company called Valve. It is a standalone software client that launched back in 2003.

In this class students can expect to learn the following:
- Customizing a User Profile
- Navigating the Steam Community and Market
- Discover that Steam isn't just games, it has art creation and audio engineering software too!
- What are Steam Points and how to collect and spend them
- How to sift through bad games and identify "asset-flip" games
- What are the different game genres
- Adding PC games you already own or an application to your Steam library
- Assessing review scores of games
- Writing our own reviews
- Learning the dangers of micro-transactions, loot boxes, and all the creative ways companies try to extract money from players
- What sales are coming up
- Finding free games!
- Avoiding scams and suspicious messages from other users
- Gaming Festivals, like Steam Next Fest from June 13th - June 20th (https://store.steampowered.com/sale/nextfest)
+ A heck of a lot more

If a student possesses one, this class will also cater to the Steam Deck that Steam released in February of 2022. Those unfamiliar with the Steam Deck; it is a hand-held like a Nintendo Switch, but it can play PC games and has access to Steam's 10k+ gaming library. Possession of the Steam Deck is not necessary to partake in the class. It is simply a hand held PC that runs the Steam software client. Being a life long user of Steam, I'm familiar with all of their other hardware. Unfortunately, we will not venture into VR with the Valve Index (yet), BUT we will learn about everything else Steam has to offer such as Steam Remote Play Together or Steam Family Sharing; features that allow you to play couch co-op games with anyone around the world or to share your games and software with a family member.

Classes will begin with a short meet-and-greet then we will delve into latest gaming trends on Steam each particular week; see what is gaining popularity, see what is losing its momentum by analyzing Steam's concurrent player populations. Every day a new game appears on Steam. We will learn how to sift through the milieu and spot diamonds amidst a sea of gaming titles. From week to week, we'll watch trailers, check out demos, we'll share reviews of games, write our own, and talk about a particular game's lore or history.
學習目標
When taking this class, students will have the opportunity to safely grow as a gamer and not fall prey to the many pitfalls that can twist a person into becoming a toxic troll or worse. Students will improve their writing by creating reviews for their favorite titles on Steam. Learners will also develop communication skills with not only their peers, but safe communication with others over the internet in the gaming world.

Please note: Steam has all profanity filters and safety filters enabled as a default setting but best to make sure. Steam as a platform possess titles with an M rating, that means intense violence, sexual content, nudity, use of drugs and alcohol, blood and gore, ect. It is precisely for this reason it is important to learn to safely navigate this platform. Steam provides very strong systems to protect its users, so be sure to do the following two things on the Steam Client after it is downloaded on a computer or laptop: Set up 'Family View' and 'Store Preferences' 'Family View' - The top left corner of the Client will have 5 categories: 'Steam' 'View' 'Friends' 'Games' 'Help' - Click 'Steam' and a dropdown menu will appear - Click 'Settings' in that dropdown menu - Go to the "Family" tab on the left side window - Click "Manage Family View" - Here you may set up "Family View" settings where you can control every aspect that your learner sees and can interact with, then protect it with a PIN. The tutorial will explain more features but this is the safest (if not a little heavy handed) option for you and your learner. The Parent Controls are very strong and you can literally lock someone out from doing anything, so please be careful with setting this up. The next system, 'Store Preferences' is even more powerful and far better nuanced. 'Store Preferences' - On the Steam client in the top right corner will be your "User Name" or basically what you decided to name the account. - Click your User Name and a dropdown menu will appear - Click "Store Preferences" from that dropdown menu - From here you are given the power to filter out General Mature Content, Violence, and even select tags. So if you do not want your child looking at "shooting games" you can simply type in "FPS" into the "Tags to Exclude" field and all shooters will be excluded from your learner's view when navigating Steam. The filtering and censoring options are very robust and I will be more than happy to assist with any and all inquiries with getting you and your learner set-up on the platform to ensure a safe and positive experience.

A lifelong gamer, there is a very special place in my heart for the art of games. In my opinion it is like opening up a very good book and having the power to direct the story. I first watched my sister play Mario on our Nintendo (yes, the original) and was hooked ever since. I've played games in every form, from live action (I'm literally an actor) to table top to digital on all devices.

I am a former Twitch Streamer and got my start in online broadcasting through that experience. Since then I've gone off to work on video games in different aspects from creating Mods (modifications to an existing game) to doing voice-over for several studios.

I am also a Steam User since 2003 with a library of over 900 games. I've extensive knowledge of the Steam platform, the gaming industry, and how to best interact with them to have a safe and positive experience.
