Informal Assessment: During the class, students get a chance to share the game they are creating with the class. During the share, the teacher highlights creative aspects of their game and makes suggestions when appropriate. The goal of this is really to highlight students' creativity and point out that everyone has the ability to produce unique and creative content.

PART 2 IN GAME DESIGN WITH ROBLOX-- This is part 2 of the Game Design With Roblox classes that I offer for Ages 9-13. Students should take part 1 first as this class builds on what students learned in the previous beginner class, and it assumes they have a working knowledge of basic scripting and Roblox Studio tools.

Future-Ready Skills-- Create2Discover classes integrate future-ready skills into the curriculum to help prepare students for a rapid-changing future. This class includes exercises that help students improve their ability to direct their own learning (self-directed learning). Students learn how to set learning goals for themselves, use resources in the Roblox Creator Hub, and utilize a new Roblox AI assistant to teach themselves how to do new things in their game.
-------------------------------------
Take what you learned in Roblox Part 1 to the next level to create an adventure game where you have to solve puzzles, unlock surprises, and use tools. Learn how to use the terrain editor and build basic models to create the ultimate game environment.

In this class, students learn to……
--Customize terrain to create a game map with different landforms.
--Join and shape simple parts to create more complex models.
--Create challenges and puzzles in their game using variables and logic.
--Use new game events to activate functions and actions.
--Design and create a tool for their player.
--Code a tool to perform an action in their game.

Safety: Parents can choose to have their child not publish their game on Roblox. A game can be created in Roblox studio (a separate program) and not published. Students can create and play their game without ever taking it online.

IMPORTANT
-- We do not use the toolbox in this class. The toolbox consists of models and other items created and scripted by other players. We stay away from the toolbox for two reasons. One, students won't learn how to create and script their own items by using other players' creations. Two, toolbox items can contain viruses that destroy your game. Please discuss this with your child prior to class.
--Typing skills are important in this class. Students do not have to be perfect at typing as the code editor helps with words, but they should be comfortable with typing words and finding keys on the keyboard.

A Roblox account is required for this program. An account is free and can be setup at https://www.roblox.com/ .

Students must download the Roblox Studio program to their Mac or PC to be able to create their games. This program is free and can be downloaded at https://www.roblox.com/create .

課 1:
Terrain Editor
Students learn how to use the terrain editor in Roblox Studio to create custom landforms and bodies of water as they setup their adventure world for the class.

課 2:
Simple Buttons
Students take an important step in their coding journey as they learn how to code an action on one object in their game to make something happen to a seperate object. A simple example of this is having the player touch a button that opens a door, but the applications go far beyond this.

課 3:
Creating a Trap
Students extend what they learned in the previous lesson to create a trap. They code a hidden pressure plate to release a boulder that hits the player. Students also review how to code a player to lose health when touched by an object. This involves both logic (if/do) and humanoid properties in the player.

課 4:
Basic Modeling
Students learn how to reshape and group parts together to create more complex 3D models. They introduced to union and negation concepts in Roblox Studio that allow creators to create unique shapes for models. Students are also introduced to self-directed learning concepts and the Roblox Creator Hub, which is a great resource for teaching yourself game creation concepts.

I have been teaching technology, coding, and 21st century skills for nearly 15 years. I am a certified elementary teacher in PA and have a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I also have run my own educational technology business in the past. My goal is to help kids learn the skills they need in today's world, but also help them believe they can be the creators of new technology instead of simply consuming it.
