課堂經歷
My Teaching Methodology and Practice I believe the point of teaching is the learning process. My teaching method uses a combination of several elements, with attention to the age group of the class, in order to make the learning process as strong as possible. I include a PowerPoint presentation, a text (that I summarize - usually the 3 main points), personal stories to make either a good point or to make the wrong choice clear, occasionally I used a brief video clip to introduce the topic, use a Socratic question teaching approach, summarize/quiz about the main points of the class content 2-3 times during a class, randomly call on students to answer a question (rather than just have kids raise hands to keep everyone engaged), and include a student presentation project with a written component - that coincides with the topic theory (for the multi-day sessions). I always speak to class lecture items that should go down in notes I ask all students to take during class and typically hand out a note-taking sheet. Specific details of the class sessions are outlined below. Text: Friendship Factor, Alan Loy McGinnis Class Session #1 Text: Friendship Factor, Alan Loy McGinnis Session Topics (1) Friendship problems for teens today. (2) The fear of what others MIGHT say. (3) The key is being a great friend. (4) The “Friendship Project” a) Make a list of important friendship character values. b) Identify the top 3 friendship character values. c) If your friendship needs go unmet, what will be the consequences? List and describe 5 things. d) Compile a list of people you know that demonstrate your “top 3-character values.” e) What obstacles (may) stand in your way? What’s your plan for maneuvering? f) Brainstorm a list of creative ways to build your friendships with lasting memories.

I’ve worked professionally and as a volunteer with youth for almost 40 years. This has been formal as well as informal in the nonprofit sector and includes many years specifically working with students from 10-25 years old. I’ve helped unwind many troubling situations youth face today as well as seeing many flourish with some helpful instruction. This is not a counseling class but focuses on content to help frame good friendships (and recognize which are not good choices).
The class comes from my concern seeing what has developed in our culture for young people today. It’s far harder, more complicated, and includes statistics that are sad with alarming suicide rates. One of the problems I see is that help is provided several years beyond when kids need help. The resources are not nearly available enough for most teens today. I’ve picked significant books on essential aspects that I’ll simplify and summarize in our classes and make them beneficial and relevant for our discussions.
