掌握程度評估
每週 1-2 小時. As this is an intensive communication class, students will be evaluated on an ongoing basis. Parents may stop in before or after class for a quick verbal check-in. A written evaluation can be made on request. The students will be filling out workbooks and writing in notebooks every class; I strongly recommend saving this work as part of the student's educational portfolio.
完成證書

課堂經歷

英語程度 - B2+
美國 6 - 9 年級
Beginner 等級
This is a highly interactive communication oriented class teaching students the French language. We read, write, and speak in French as much as possible. For novices over age ten, we use English to explain, but the goal is always to use more and more French every day; after about a hundred hours of lessons *and* practice the student should be able to manage an immersion class with no English.
Students need to be open minded and ready to learn different ways of doing things. Every language has its own character and its own quirks; students have to leave their comfort zone in English and try out new ways of approaching things. This course is supportive and students will always be helped through, but they do need to be brave and dive in.
I have a large collection of high quality French language materials and we will work from copies from several books and workbooks. These multiple viewpoints give the extensive practice needed without going over one book to death. Many of the stories are funny and silly. It's always better to learn by reading something interesting and fun. Since our goal is to speak the language, we read all the stories and dialogues and exercises aloud, and we speak the answers before we write them. The pairing of reading and writing is very useful in getting ideas into memory.
In this class I am going to introduce the International Phonetic Alphabet. This is a system of symbols which is an exact match of one symbol to one sound, unlike French and even words English. The small amount of time needed to learn the IPA pays itself back many times over when you can just read off the vocabulary list or dictionary and know you have the exact pronunciation.
A syllabus has been provided with an outline of the material we want to cover. The speed or pacing on that syllabus assumes the students have had an introductory oral French course and probably know a number of words and phrases. Students who know more can move ahead faster, while those who are total novices may move much more slowly. The speed is totally flexible. The course can be taken two or three times as needed to master novice level French.
Links to Google Docs will be provided so parents can copy the materials. As we are only using selected sections from each, at this point we don't need to but the whole book. It helps if you can copy ten or a dozen pages at a time so we can move through the material as rapidly as possible, thank you.
Since this is an oral communication class, students need to have a microphone and camera and keep them turned on during lessons. They will need a reasonably quiet work area where they can listen and speak with few interruptions. The class is relaxed and friendly and paced according to student needs, but we are trying to get to a functional level of French where we can enjoy stories as soon as possible so we need to stay on task.

學習目標

Students will learn how to speak, read, listen, and write novice level French. We will cover greetings, family, jobs, likes, common objects and animals, etc.
Students will learn about masculine and feminine nouns in French, singular and plural, and the agreement of adjectives and articles and possessives with nouns.

父母的引導和規範
Stories chosen are appropriate for the age/grade level, assuming an average of about Grade 5-9 age 10-14. At this age often violence and inappropriate behaviour are described, in order to have action and plot. Gratuitous violence is avoided. Questions about sexuality -- normal at this age -- will be referred back to parents. We will be using the web as a resource for language, vocabulary, facts, music, and images. The teacher will model searching in a directed way for educational purposes. However, trolls lurk everywhere and on rare occasions inappropriate vocabulary and very rarely images may show up. These sites will be closed immediately and the teacher will give a short message about appropriate and useful web use. One of our texts, Moi Je Parle Francais, is illustrated with cartoons in a particular exaggerated style. There are a number if national and gender stereotypes. I don't like these but the rest of the book is worth keeping. It is to be noted that the cartoons don't discriminate, they stereotype everybody, including ourselves. I will try to discuss this in class as well. BTW the word stereotype is French and we can have a learning experience. If a student is unhappy about a particular issue please do bring it u with me! We can stop using that book or at least skip those pages. French culture is more open about sexuality than American. On occasion a video may show something a little adult. Thus is *never* the main focus of the class, and is generally no more than you might see on prime time TV. We don't dwell on these things and concentrate on the language and culture. Please note: French has grammatical gender. Every single object has a gender, from a table (F) to a shoe (M). Gender neutral language is literally impossible. My apologies. Unfortunately the Academie Francaise has not moved on this so we are stuck with it.
先決條件
Read and write middle school English. If a student has difficulties, please talk to me - I can help. No French required; beginner level. Be open and ready to learnnew things. Speed adjusted to student's level.
供應清單
1. Texts and workbooks

We will be using selected materials from a number of different textbooks in order to have variety. These texts date from the 1950's to 1990's and are mostly standard.
We are not doing all of these, only selected parts, to be determined after I know the students' starting level.

Selections from:
Moi Je Parle Francais Level 1, first half approximately
French the Easy Way Preliminary and Units 1 to 5
Le Fancais Vivant Book 1 preliminary units 1 to 5
Ratus et Ses Amis (text) units 1 and 2
Ratus et Ses Amis (workbooks) units 1 and 2
(possibly) LeFrancais Intensif Units 1 to 5

I will provide Google Docs links to copies of selected sections that we are going to use. You can download these and print what is required for class. These are *for educational use in this class only*, not to be copied and published anywhere else.

**I strongly recommend getting a three-prong folder (duotang style) and putting all these text and workbook sheets in it in order. You can use tabs to separate the different books. This avoids a lot of time wasting paper shuffling in class, and afterwards you can save it as part of your school portfolio. **

2. Notebook

Students should have an ordinary school notebook with plain lined paper, to write any class notes that are not in the workbooks.
I strongly recommend pen, not pencil.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

3. Work environment

-a computer screen large enough to see shared pages.
- a good sound system or headphones to hear pronunciation clearly
- a camera so I can see them speaking (lip motions are important).
- a work surface where they can put their notebooks to write; a good supply of pens.
- a quiet undisturbed space and time so we can all focus.
Please note since we are talking constantly, and watching each other's mouth movements, please finish yiour snacks before class, and no gum.

Hello! I have been teaching since 1974 and tutoring privately since 1984. I've been on Outschool since 2019. I've taught a lot of people to read, write, and speak both English and French. I work with students with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, as well as those who just fell through the cracks. I also teach reading in French (which I speak and read fluently), reading in English, high school French, and advanced mathematics for college and university.
I keep up to date with reading about the latest in reading and
education and I participate actively in educational Facebook pages.
My academic background includes a BSc from MIT, MA in Education from Tufts University, Honours BA in Mathematics and double major in Foreign Languages and linguistics from Bishop's University in Quebec. I also studied for three years in graduate school math but had to leave for health reasons (respiratory failure of unknown cause). After some years teaching in classrooms from K to college level and four decades tutoring, I now live semi-retired in a Quebec village. I speak both English and French equally every day with neighbours, people in shops, medical staff, etc I like to learn new words and expressions all the time.
