Fractions tend to be one of the most intimidating subjects taught in math. I am here to help your learner build confidence and skills with fractions. We will start this course by learning the basics of fractions, like key vocabulary and how to use models, and then we will spend focused, intentional time exploring a multitude of concepts. In this 8-week course, students will meet twice weekly to learn all about fractions. This class will be casual and the students are encouraged to converse, think aloud, and ask questions. If time permits, we will complete a trivia game covering the topics for each lesson. This class will help your learner to build a strong foundation that will prepare them for future advanced math concepts. (Note: A final assessment will be given upon parent request. The purpose of this class is for students to be comfortable with the concepts taught and not feel anxious about testing.) Lesson 1: Recognizing and Naming Fractions: Students will learn basic fraction vocabulary and use models to recognize and name an assortment of unit fractions. Lesson 2: Fraction Models: Students will recognize and name fractions when utilizing models such as pictures and number lines. Lesson 3: Equivalent Fractions: Students will learn to make equivalent fractions using models and multiplication strategies. Lesson 4: Comparing Fractions: Students will use their knowledge of making equivalent fractions to compare fractions with like and unlike denominators. Lesson 5: Ordering Fractions: Students will use their knowledge of making equivalent fractions to order a set of fractions with like and unlike denominators. Lesson 6: Reducing Fractions (also called simplifying) Lesson 7: Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators (with reducing). Lesson 8: Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators (with reducing). Lesson 9: Multiplying Fractions (with reducing). Lesson 10: Dividing Fractions (with reducing). Lesson 11: Mixed Numbers: Naming and Modeling Lesson 12: Improper Fractions: Naming and Modeling Lesson 13: Converting Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions Lesson 14: Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers Lesson 15: Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions Lesson 16: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions with Mixed Numbers

Students may need help accessing Kahoot. If time allows, we will test our knowledge by participating in an interactive online quiz covering the topics for the lesson. Results from these activities will help the teacher to know which topics have been mastered and which topics need additional discussion.

My name is Mrs. Rebecca. I have taught every subject, grades third through sixth and kindergarten, in public schools in Kentucky since 2007. I have also taught classes online for many years, helping students learn the English language. I have my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Elementary Education. I have a technology endorsement along with my Master's degree, and my graduate and undergraduate degrees are from Western Kentucky University. I’m also a Google Certified Educator. I am a mom to three beautiful girls, and I love to read, cook, and spend time with my family. I love spending time with my 3 dogs, too!
I am passionate about teaching and learning. My approach to teaching is founded on forming positive, genuine relationships with my students and their families. I am a firm believer that students will learn best when they feel a mutual respect with their teacher in the classroom. I love to have fun in the classroom, but more importantly, I want my lessons to be relevant to my students.
