✍️ Using cursive handwriting has been shown to develop fine motor skills in addition to improving learning, memory retention, writing speed, syntax, spelling and word formation (i.e. minimizing letter reversals). 🤹 This class invites children to a multi-sensory experience. Each session begins with coordination exercises that require spatial awareness, crossing of the mid-line (from left to right), moving rhythmically, and reciting short verses. Following the movement segment, students will be guided to create symmetrical art known in Waldorf schools as “form drawing.” The benefits of form drawing include improved spatial orientation, visual tracking, a sense of balance and enhanced attention to detail. 👉 Students will be introduced to new cursive letters each week and guided to practice tracing them and making the strokes correctly on paper. They will also take turns reading texts in cursive (out loud). After each session, children will be provided with practice sheets to complete between sessions. This process will solidify the cursive letters that they learn. 🌸 I look forward to sharing this beautiful and important skill of cursive handwriting through this interdisciplinary class. Please refer to the supply list below and have the materials ready before class so that your child can participate in all the activities. 🌟 This is an *ongoing* class which children are free to join at any time. If they stay on for the entire cycle, they will learn the lowercase and uppercase letters using the D’Nealian script. 🖐 To join this class, students should be able to write in print ⏰ SCHEDULING: If you don’t see a suitable time, please write to me. 📅 2023 Week of 1/16: Lowercase (c, a, d, g, q); Uppercase (C, A) Lowercase (i, t, p, u, w, j); Uppercase (P, U, W) Week of 1/23: Lowercase (e, l, f, h); Uppercase (E, L, H) Lowercase (k, r, s); Uppercase (K, R, S) Week of 1/30: Lowercase (b, o, v); Uppercase (B, O, V) Lowercase (m, n, x, y, z); Uppercase (M, N, X, Y) Week of 2/6: Uppercase (D, F, G, J) Uppercase (I, Q, T, Z); Review 🔁 After eight weeks, the cycle repeats. Students can join and begin learning the letters at any point in the cycle. 👓 PLEASE NOTE: Students will use a printout page with lines to place behind a blank page. After they practice writing with the lines as a guide, they will be encouraged to try to write without the lines. In many Waldorf schools, children are usually expected to write on unlined paper. This course combines both methods. 📕 SUPPLY LIST: • Hacky sack – or a soft ball/rolled up pair of socks which they can easily throw and catch in *one hand* • An *unlined* notebook, A4 size or larger • Printouts (posted in the Classroom) 📜

In Waldorf schools, form drawing is a precursor to cursive writing. Cursive is usually taught between 2nd and 3rd grade when students have a good grasp on print writing. During my work as a Waldorf primary school teacher, I taught both form drawing and cursive handwriting.
