In this 8-week course, "Flying through Naval Aviation," students will embark on an exciting journey through the history of naval aviation, tracing its evolution from early flight to modern-day technological advances. We’ll explore key moments in naval history, the contributions of aviation pioneers, and iconic aircraft that have defined naval aviation. The course also highlights the importance of Pensacola, Florida, known as the cradle of naval aviation. Teaching Style: As this is a self-paced course, my teaching style will emphasize **flexibility** and **engagement**. Each week will include a mixture of **video lectures**, **reading assignments**, and **interactive virtual activities** that simulate historical scenarios or the experience of flying a naval aircraft. The content is designed to accommodate different learning styles, blending visuals, text, and hands-on learning. Interaction: Though the class is self-paced, students will have several ways to interact with me: - Discussion boards will provide a space for questions, insights, and reflections. - Personalized feedback weekly assessments will help students gauge their progress and reinforce key concepts. Introduction to Naval Aviation History
This week, students will start by learning what naval aviation is: the use of aircraft by naval forces to help with tasks like spying, attacking enemies, and supporting ships. They’ll discover how the U.S. Navy first began using aircraft in the early 20th century, with the launch of the USS Langley in 1911, and trace its development through World Wars and beyond. Students will use an interactive timeline to explore important events in naval aviation. The week will end with a short quiz to check
課 2:
The Birth of Naval Aviation
In Week 2, students will center on the influential figures who helped shape naval aviation. Students will learn about pioneers such as Eugene Ely, who made the first successful shipboard landing, and Glenn Curtiss, a key figure in early aviation technology. The lessons will cover their contributions, achievements, and the challenges they overcame. Through this, students will appreciate the role of individual innovators in advancing naval aviation.
課 3:
Aircraft in Naval Aviation
This week, students will delve into the development of key naval aircraft from the early biplanes to modern jets. This week will cover notable aircraft such as the SBD Dauntless, F6F Hellcat, and the F/A-18 Hornet. Discussions will focus on their design, capabilities, and how they changed naval warfare. By examining these aircraft, students will understand the technological progress and its impact on naval operations.
課 4:
World War II and Naval Aviation
Week 4 will cover the role of naval aviation during World War II. Students will examine major naval battles where aircraft played a crucial role, such as the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Coral Sea. They will learn about the strategic use of aircraft carriers and their impact on naval warfare. The lessons will highlight how World War II shaped the development of naval aviation tactics and technology.
