THIS IS A FLEX COURSE, MEANING THERE ARE NO LIVE MEETINGS.

Who doesn't love meeting amazing animals? In this course, you will be introduced to axolotls, pangolins, extreme jellyfish, and squid that really glow! Please note that there are no live meetings. Also, if you have taken my class about any of these topics, you will find those classes repetitive. 

Here is the format for this course:

Each week, students will watch a presentation, consisting of one or more videos, which cover information about an animal. Each presentation will include slide presentations featuring photographs and information about the animals, and questions to consider. After viewing the presentation, students will respond to their choice of questions which will be provided on Padlet, a website which does not require them to provide any personal information or set up an account. They will answer their questions directly on Padlet, as well as respond to each others' posts. Finally, students will play Kahoot!, a game-based multiple choice activity which also does not require an account or any personal information. A link to the Kahoot! will be provided in the classroom. Although students will not be playing against each other in real time, they will be part of a Kahoot! challenge with others. 

Students will be able to access the videos on Monday mornings for 4 Mondays. Links to informational and educational websites may also be posted in the classroom. I will vet any websites I post. Please check the classroom for handouts, which will be uploaded when the videos are released. Any handouts are purely optional. 

Students are welcome to post questions directly to the classroom or on Padlet. I will respond within a day, except on weekends. 

Although there will be no face-to-face meetings, this class is interactive in the following ways:
Teacher to Learner: I will respond to learners' questions and answers on Padlet and in the classroom.
Learner to Teacher: Learner's will ask and answer questions in the Outschool Classroom and on Padlet.
Learner to Learner: Learners will respond to each other on Padlet, with some questions specifically directed to interacting with other learners. Learners will also participate in a Kahoot! challenge after each class.

About my style: I run an interactive classroom as much as possible. Students are encouraged to share ideas and offer polite suggestions. I strive to treat each student with respect and I value every contribution. Even with 30-plus years in education under my belt, I remain inspired by the creativity and wonder of each child I teach. I love nothing more than watching children learn to love critters!

Week 2: Meet the Precious Pangolin!
Week 3: Meet Some Jiggly Jellyfish!
Week 4: Meet Gorgeous Glowing Squid!

1. Learners will develop an appreciation of these animals by learning their characteristics and other information abou them.
2. Learners will be introduced to scientific concepts and words, including scientific names, habitats, and adaptations.
3. Learners will improve virtual interaction skills through answering prompts and responding to others.

Both Padlet and Kahoot are COPPA approved websites. They do not require registration, and do not store information on students.

I've been studying science all my life. My father, Robert H. Mount, was a renowned herpetologist. As such, I grew up surrounded by animals, plants, and other life forms. I followed my interests in college by studying biology as well as education. I taught middle school science for 21 years, then worked as the middle school science education specialist for the State Department of Education in Alabama for 6 years. In retirement, I am still actively involved in many scientific communities, and stay engaged with groups such as the North American Association for Environmental Education and the National Science Teachers Association. I am passionate and knowledgeable about the study of life, and about passing on this passion to youngsters.
