課堂經歷

*This is a flexible schedule option of my popular note-taking class. Please note that flex classes do not include live meetings. If your student would prefer live meetings, please look for my non-flex version of this class.*

In this four-week "flex" class, learners will be introduced to four unique types of note-taking - the outline, mind-mapping, the Cornell method, and T-charts. Students will learn about the different styles and when each type is effective to use. In addition, students will learn other note-taking and study skill tips and tricks such as color-coding, organization, etc.

Lessons are delivered using a video of me teaching along with an interactive slide-show. Within the slide shows students will have questions and prompts to respond to. After learning about a specific note-taking technique, learners will have the opportunity to practice using each type of of note-taking twice, once while reading a short article, and again while listening to an educational video. Students will then post an image of their notes in the classroom, and I will provide feedback. Each week there will also be a discussion post for students to engage with each other in which they talk about the pros and cons of that lesson's note-taking technique. The final week of class students will play a bingo-style game to review what they have learned.

By the end of the class, learners will be able to determine what type of note-taking to use for various situations, and will be able to effectively take notes using those formats.

Week 1: Introduction to Note-taking and Discussion of its Importance / The Outline Method
Week 2: Mind-Mapping / Using Color to Organize Notes
Week 3: The Cornell Method / Using Notes to Review Materials
Week 4: T-Charts / Review and Discussion of all Methods

Lessons will be posted every Sunday. As this is a flexible schedule course, students can participate whenever works for them, but still need to submit their work weekly. Learners will interact with the instructor through interactive slide shows, end-of-class game, and weekly posting of their note-taking. Feedback from instructor will be provided within 24-36 hours. Learners will also have the opportunity to engage with each other though weekly discussion posts.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit more about me as an educator! I have been teaching students of all ages from little kiddos to middle school, high school, and adult learners for over 20 years in various capacities. I have a BA in English from Western Washington University, a Master in Teaching from Evergreen State College, and a Master in Transformative Language Arts from Goddard College. I've taught in juvenile detention centers and prisons, in traditional schools, in online programs, at community colleges, in daycares, and even as a homeschooling mom! I've also worked as a director for several different educational programs.

I believe strongly in the transformative power of language and its ability to create change both within us as individuals as well as within our communities and society. I love when I witness a student find just the right words to express how they feel or come alive as they read a poem to a class! In my teaching I encourage students to find their own voices and use those voices to write about what matters most to them. I believe in meeting students where they are at and developing learning from their existing passions. I think everybody has the ability to be a writer, even if they don't know it yet!

I look forward to working with you and engaging in fun and thought-provoking writing assignments!
