In this eight week fifth grade math course, students will learn important math skills including fraction operations and measurement conversions, as outlined by the Common Core Standards. Whether your student is looking to get ahead of the curriculum, needs to review these important skills, or is learning these concepts for the first time, this class is the perfect way to ensure that they are successful with mastering these standards. Taught by a licensed fifth-grade teacher, your child will receive all the feedback, guidance, and support they need as they work on skills such as finding equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers, and converting measurements in both the customary and metric systems. **Your child does not have to take parts 1 or 3 of this course in order to be successful with these skills. Each skill is taught in isolation and each trimester has a different focus. This trimester has a fraction focus and is great for students who are struggling with these concepts or who are new to fraction operations.** Class Structure: Students will begin each lesson by watching the pre-recorded mini-lesson. This will allow them to enter each week with the background knowledge needed to meet the objectives. Students will complete a Nearpod lesson, interacting with other students on the collaboration board, participating in the Nearpod games, and completing math vocabulary practice within the lesson. Each week, students will complete a homework assignment related to the week's lesson. These are teacher-created handouts that are specifically aligned to the skills being taught that week. They can turn their homework into the teacher for personalized feedback and guidance. Each week, they will engage in a conversation with other members of the group on the classroom board about how the week's content can be applied to a real-life situation. Games, additional handouts and activities, and links to interactive practice tools will be provided throughout the course, when applicable. Schedule: Week 1: Finding Equivalent Fractions (with multiplication and division) Week 2: Adding and Subtracting Fractions and Mixed Numbers with Like and Unlike Denominators Week 3: Fraction Word Problems (addition & subtraction) Week 4: Multiplying Fractions & Finding Area with Fractional Sides Week 5: Multiplying Fractions Word Problems (review & game) Week 6: Dividing Fractions Week 7: Dividing Fractions Word Problems (review & game) Week 8: Measurement: Converting Among Standard Measurement Units

Hello, and welcome to Outschool! My name is Ms. Kristin. I am a licensed elementary school teacher with my Masters Degree in Elementary Education for grades 1-6. I absolutely love teaching! I have taught grades 3, 4, and 5 in a brick-and-mortar school for over eight years and have been teaching online, too, for the past four years. As a classroom teacher, I have become very familiar with elementary subjects for grades 1-5 and their corresponding standards in math, English, reading, writing, science, social studies, and test prep. Familiarity with different grade levels allows me to differentiate my instruction and guide students to higher levels of thinking as they master grade-level concepts and seek to enhance their skills. My lessons are based on Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards.

Educational Philosophy:
I believe that students succeed when they are engaged, valued, and when lessons are personalized in some way to each individual student. During each lesson, I use positive reinforcement and gentle guidance to ensure students feel safe sharing their ideas. I strive to foster an inclusive and relaxed classroom environment and encourage students to participate, learn from each other, and have fun with the materials.
I am excited to get the opportunity to teach your child, and hope to see them in the classroom soon!
