課堂經歷

美國等級 5 - 8
I was raised on a farm where we raised cattle for beef and horses. I currently live on a farm with my own family raising horses and cattle. We treat all of our animals with respect and learn all the government regulations surrounding animal welfare.

When I was younger my dad taught me how to watch the futures market for cattle and crops. Now, I take care of all our risks on the farm. I have taken classes all through my 4-H and college years on how to minimize risks on the farm. I have continued to take workshops to learn current ways to minimize the risks on the farm. My dad also harvest corn and soybeans. We research every year what seeds to plant and how to take care of the crops for maximum yield. We do not have an organic farm but have researched what it takes to be organic using the resources from our Kansas State extension office.

My family owns a small farm but large farms have their advantages. During week 3, I will discuss my own experiences on our farm size and involve the students by discussing their own experiences. I have researched the history of farming and how it has changed through hundreds of years. From horses and plows to the drones and large tractors we use today. I have helped many farmers harvest using the many types of equipment needed.

I have learned about farming methods through my experiences growing up on a farm, 4-H workshops, college classes for my ag education minor, working with Iowa State and Kansas State extension offices, completing workshops to learn more how to run my own farm, and working with neighborhood farmers. I have used my knowledge to teach younger learners through 4-H programs and workshops. There is a lot of misinformation out there from anti farming videos and articles. The documentary Farmland helps put a face to the farmers that are dedicated to feed the world like my family. We use current research for farming methods and follow all the government regulations.

The students will need a way to watch the youtube videos and documentary. https://tv.movie/movie/farmland/47042?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Search&t_source=64&utm_campaign=2613&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr7amkpPN6AIVB1YMCh0cBAPMEAAYAyAAEgKYcfD_BwE
The students will follow the link to rent the video. I will provide all other resources in the classroom. The students will need to post the assignments by printing, typing or making a video.
除了 Outschool 教室外,本課程也使用:
  • kahoot
  • YouTube
  • Google forms
There will be some sensitive topics discussed such as GMOs, animal welfare, organic farming, and more listed in the description. There are also some links I will put in the classroom that may be sensitive to some students. For example, animal laws about hurting animals. ** In the documentary, there is a minute in the video it shows some cruelty to animals. The farmers in the documentary discuss that is not how most farmers treat and how animals should not be treated. I will put the times if you want to skip over that part.

I understand everyone has their own points of view. I welcome all points of view in the classroom and we will use the different opinions as research topics. In my other agricultural classes, I have had students that choose to be vegans. I enjoy hearing their reasons and they teach me just as much as I teach them. I do not put anyones' lifestyle choices down and do not expect it from anyone else in the classroom. This should be a safe place to discuss different opinions. If someone has a different opinion then we will discuss it in a civil way and find research article supporting our opinion.

Addressing misconceptions especially about the ag industry is a process. We are presented with information everyday through lots of different sources. We must determine if the information is valid or has some bias. During the first week, I will give the students a credibility checklist and make a mini lesson about the checklist. This will help to determine if the information is credible or bias. Some items on the checklist include what is the organizations purpose, is it based on facts or opinions, and are there references to other sources. This checklist can be used for any of my resources I use so the students can make up their own minds about agriculture and the different topics discussed.

*There is some religion mentioned in the classroom. Also, one farmer talks about losing his dad to cancer. So that may be hard for some students.
