課堂經歷

Students will hear professionally performed stories, participate in the storytelling process, and engage in activities to highlight and promote the understanding of scope and sequence. Please note that I am telling (performing) the story, rather than reading a book, though, when possible I have sited below the source material. This class is highly interactive and promotes students to be active participants.

Week 1 students will hear The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything, written by Linda Williams.
In this story an old woman has some interesting encounters as she walks home and ends up helping save the day for one of the characters. Students will participate in the repetitive sequence of actions like stomping and clapping. They will also use the whiteboard to recreate the sequence of events and the character at the end.

Week 2 students will hear "Abiyoyo," a folktale written down by Pete Seeger.
In this story a boy who loves to play the ukulele helps a town banish a giant. Students will be invited to sing along with the song that is part of the story. They will also use the whiteboard to draw a map of the setting depicting all of the key events in the story.

Week 3 Students will hear “Red, Red Lips,” a folktale which goes by many different names, and is about a young boy who faces his fears at the funny conclusion to the story and finds he really has nothing to fear. I learned this particular version from fellow storyteller, Donna Washington.
Students will be invited to participate in the repetitive phrase said throughout the story. After the story, they will use their imaginations to play “What’s behind the curtain?”

Week 4 students will hear “Skunnee Wundee” an Algonquin tale found in Favorite Scary Stories of American Children by Richard and Judy Dockrey Young.
In this story the main character, Skunee Wundee, faces a giant and wins. Students will make predictions and create their version of the stone giant, the boy, or the turtle.

I have been an educator and storyteller for almost thirty years. I taught in the public school system for ten years, two of which were spent as a media specialist. I homeschooled my daughter through the eighth grade and during that time provided a Waldorf-style preschool at my home. I was a teaching artist for Penland School of Crafts for ten years going into all of the elementary schools in Mitchell County, NC and providing Effective Teacher Training for the other teaching artists. I have taught all ages from preschool through adult. I have also been a professional storyteller for almost twenty years and have performed at a wide variety of schools, libraries, festivals, and private functions. I bring all of my experience to my online teaching and always strive to provide the best experience possible for students.

The stories I have selected have all been used in a variety of educational and entertainment settings and have been enjoyed without controversy. Though I haven't seen any complications with the stories I will be using for this class, I understand some children can feel unsettled by story events and may feel strongly about ideas presented. It is my practice to tune into students and make adjustments as needed, to gently guide discussions, being respectful of individual feelings and ideas, and, to the best of my abilities, make sure all students feel heard and have a positive experience.
