課堂經歷

A wide variety of adventures will supply a rich foundation for imaginative and enjoyable writing. Your students will work through IEW Units 1–4 as they learn to take notes, write from their notes, rewrite narrative stories, and summarize references.

Each week, the teacher will introduce the structure, as well as elements of style, such as quality adjectives, strong verbs, use of clauses, etc... Vocabulary building, and practice including these rich words in our writing is also included. Concepts will be introduced through direct instruction, guided practice, peer interaction, and occasional interactive games.

Please see the "materials" section for information on the required text. Before taking this course, students should be able to read at a 3rd grade level and write in complete sentences. A basic understanding of the parts of speech is also helpful. No IEW experience is needed before taking this course.

Weekly schedule of structure and style concepts:

Unit 1 (Note Making and Outlines)
Week 1: The Lion and the Mouse,
                   The Ant and the Grasshopper
Unit 2 (Writing from Notes)
Week 2: The Trumpeter Taken Prisoner
Week 3: The Four Oxen and the Lioness, -ly adverbs
Week 4: The Miklmaid and Her Pail, title rule
Week 5: The Mule and His Buyer, who/which clauses
Unit 3 (Retelling Narrative Stories)
Week 6: Theseus and the Minotaur Part 1
Week 7: Theseus and the Minotaur Part 2, strong verbs
Week 8: Daedalus and Icarus, more strong verbs
Week 9: Bellerophon and the Chimera, because clause
Week 10: Damon and Pythias, more strong verbs
Unit 4 (Summarizing a Reference)
     Week 11: Neverland, topic-clincher sentences
     Week 12: Swans
Week 13: Aesop, Author of Fables, quality adjectives
Week 14: The Brothers Grimm, clauses
Week 15: Hans Christian Andersen, quality adjectives

This course has two parts, the first of which, is covered in this course. Upon completion, please consider enrolling in the Semester 2 course, offered in the Spring, where we will continue to develop even more elements of writing structure and style.
