In this class, learners will engage with books of their choosing using Bloom's Taxonomy, a framework for understanding different levels of learning and engagement. Learners will practice important reading comprehension skills while also exploring their creativity through a variety of activities. This is a flexible schedule class which means there are no live meetings. All the materials and lessons will be uploaded in the Outschool classroom. Every Monday by 9 am Central Time. I will upload a video lesson for the learners to watch and engage with. There will be posts through out the week so the learners stay connected and engaged in their reading journey. Learners will have ample opportunity to interact with the instructor and each other through the Outschool classroom. They will work independently to answer the reading comprehension questions and create their creative responses, but will have opportunities to share their work with the class and receive feedback. The class will also include a brief discussion about the books they have read using Bloom's Taxonomy as the base for the questions, and learners will be encouraged to ask questions and participate in this discussion. No specific experience or knowledge is required for this class, but students should be able to read and write at their grade level and the books they choose. Learners should provide their own books and will be given a list of reading comprehension questions to guide their engagement with the story. Learners will also be encouraged to be creative and use their imagination in their responses. Week 1: This week we will discuss how to choose your books that fit the learner's reading level and interest and be introduced to the reading challenge bingo board. The bingo board will have 20 different ideas of where to read or what to read. The goal of this bingo board is to make reading fun and give ideas on how to engage with books. The bingo board will be due at the end of the 4 weeks. The learners will need to choose their books by the end of the week and share the titles and author using the Google Jamboard link. The learners will also create their reading goal for the next 4 weeks. How many books are they wanting to read? Some may choose to read only 1 while others may choose to read 4 or more during this class. We will also create a reading plan so they can be successful in their reading goal. Weeks 2 and 3: Reading goal and bingo board check-in. We will see how well each learners is meeting the goals their created and updating the goals if need be. There will be a video lesson asking reading comprehension questions using Bloom's Taxonomy as the framework. We will also go through a variety of reading comprehension strategies including predicting, visualizing, summarizing, asking questions, and making connections. The learners will be using the Google Jamboard and Nearpod to be able to interact and answer the reading comprehension questions. Week 4: We will celebrate the success of every learner. There will be a celebration video and a project idea video. The learners will choose a project to complete this week. If the learners read more than one book they may choose the number of projects and which books to use to complete the projects. Project ideas: Create a different ending for the story Write a sequel to the story Draw a picture of a scene from the story Write a letter from one character in the story to another character, describing an important event in the story Create a comic strip that retells a part of the story Write a song or poem inspired by the story Design a new book cover for the story Create a game or activity based on the story Learners may choose to take this class as many times as they wish. The content will stay the same but they may choose to read different books each time. Books that can be read: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle Wonder by R.J. Palacio Charlotte's Web by E.B. White Matilda by Roald Dahl The BFG by Roaldl Dahl Ramona series by Beverly Cleary The Boxcar Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warner Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park
