This course is designed for second-grade students eager to strengthen their reading comprehension skills in a fun and supportive online learning environment. In this ongoing course, we will practice our reading comprehension skills by reading a different story each week and focusing on a specific comprehension skill. The student will then have the opportunity to practice the comprehension skill taught by completing a short reading activity. This class is intended for first graders who are already reading independently, second graders reading at grade level or third graders wanting extra reading comprehension practice at the second grade level. Learners who are not yet reading independently should wait to take this class until they can read independently. Second grade is a critical time for developing reading comprehension skills. Here are some key reading comprehension skills that will be taught throughout this ongoing class: Week 1 (2/26-3/2)Understanding Main Idea: Identify the main idea or topic of a story or passage. Distinguish between important details and less important information. Week 2 (3/4-3/9)Sequencing: Arrange events or information in the correct order. Understand the concept of beginning, middle, and end in a story. Week 3 (3/18-3/23)Making Predictions: Make predictions about what might happen next in a story based on the information provided. Week 4 (3/25-3/30)Drawing Inferences: Infer meaning from the text by using clues and information presented. Week 5 (4/1-4/6)Identifying Cause and Effect: Recognize cause-and-effect relationships within a story or passage. Week 6 (4/8-4/13)Character Analysis: Understand and describe characters' traits, feelings, and actions. Recognize the difference between main characters and supporting characters. Week 7 (4/15-4/20)Comparing and Contrasting: Compare and contrast different characters, events, or settings in a story. Week 8 (4/22-4/27)Making Connections: Connect the events in a story to personal experiences or other stories. Week 9 (4/29-5/4)Asking Questions: Generate questions about the text to demonstrate understanding and curiosity. Week 10 (5/6-511)Summarizing: Summarize the main events of a story or passage in their own words. Week 11 (5/13-5/18)Identifying Story Elements: Recognize and understand story elements such as setting, plot, and resolution. My goal is to teach and reteach these skills as the class continues. As the skills are re-taught, new stories and passages will be used. To support the development of these skills, I will work to engage your child in regular reading activities, provide opportunities for discussions about stories, and encourage them to express their thoughts and opinions about what they read. Additionally, I will use a variety of texts to help your child develop a well-rounded set of reading comprehension skills. This is an ongoing course. Specific Skill will be listed for each week.

Hello my lovely parents and students! I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to work with you, and share my love for teaching.
I am an elementary school teacher, and I believe that every child has the ability to learn and become their most amazing self. I am passionate about helping students achieve their full potential while catering to their individual academic needs.
I started out my teaching career as a Special Education teacher. Working in this area of education allowed me to see how unique the learning style of every child can be. Throughout this time, I learned how to individualize education and create lessons that could reach multiple ability levels.
After four years of working in Special Education, I then decided to transition into teaching Elementary grades 2-4 for the next 11 years. During this time, I learned ways to really connect with my students, and I was able to create curriculum that was engaging and led to great success of my students. I also developed a deep understanding of what skills were important for students to be successful in each grade level and how to support them as they prepared for the upcoming grade level.
I also have expertise in teaching mathematics up to grade 9. At the beginning of my career, I chose to obtain a Master's Degree in Mathematics, and I love to help other's see that they too can become mathematicians.
Learning should be fun and engaging. Each student should have the opportunity to feel successful, grow and develop their whole-self. Whether participating in a one-on-one tutoring session or group setting, I will ensure your child experiences a safe and encouraging environment.
