課堂經歷
How do completely different animals share the same anatomy? In this 45 minute class, we will be learning how different animals can have the same anatomy, even if it's not for the same purpose and why. We will discuss the different types of structures, the methods we use to compare them, and how they help us understand evolution better. Understanding the differences and similarities of different species is essential to understanding how each one adapted over time to where they are today. This...

Students will gain a basic understanding of comparative anatomy, the different ways we compare structures, and how we use these similarities and differences to have a better understanding of shared ancestry. They will also learn how different animals have adapted based on their environments to survive, and what happens when their adaptations no longer help. The information given in this course will allow students to have a better grasp of evolution and how we can use anatomy to show how related to other species we are.
I have a Bachelor's of Science in Biology and Animal Sciences, focusing on anatomy, behavior, wildlife, and environmental study all 4 years.
I will be supplying slides for the game we play, nothing is needed on the students end!
There will be a picture or two of animal and human embryos, as we will briefly go over how we compare them in class, as well as skeletal images and reference photos.
Source material for class comes from: "The Dissection of Vertebrates" Second Edition by Gerardo De Iuliis and Dino Pulerà (2011). "Comparative Anatomy" from Britannica.com "Developmental Biology" Sixth Edition by Scott F Gilbert (2000), found through ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
