Writing an essay does not have to be a difficult task; however, many kids struggle when attempting to write essays that will meet academic and testing standards. As an instructional designer and certified teacher, I have taken the time to break down the steps needed to write an essay in a way that is easy for kids ages 8-12 years old to understand and follow along. Week 1Lesson 1What is an Essay Anyway? and Analyzing Essay PromptsStudents will learn what an essay is and how to analyze essay prompts.Lesson 2Using Text Sources and Writing a Thesis StatementStudents will learn how to use text sources and write a thesis statement.Lesson 3The Planning SheetStudents will learn how to use a planning sheet for their essay.Lesson 4Writing an Interesting IntroductionStudents will learn how to write an interesting introduction for their essay.Week 2Lesson 5Selecting the Evidence and Using ElaborationStudents will learn how to select evidence and use elaboration in their essay.Lesson 6Writing the Body of the EssayStudents will learn how to write the body of their essay.Lesson 7Writing a Captivating ConclusionStudents will learn how to write a captivating conclusion for their essay.Lesson 8Proofreading and EditingStudents will learn how to proofread and edit their essay.
- When given a writing prompt or topic, 4th grade students will use the prescribed writing process to draft a five-paragraph essay containing an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion during the prescribed time of 120 minutes and using grammatically correct sentences.
