They aren't quite sure how to develop body paragraphs that are clear, fully elaborated, and effective. Some find it impossible or difficult to write an introduction and conclusion that are more than just a few sentences. Week 1Lesson 1Get a Grip on Genre with HollywoodStudents learn to differentiate between various genres of writing: expository, narrative, & opinion.Lesson 2Talk the TalkStudents learn how 5-paragraph expository essays are structured and organized.Week 2Lesson 3Give it a Go!Learners annotate a sample essay.Lesson 4TechnologyGet the scoop on using the necessary tech in an online English class.Week 3Lesson 5Two Rules of ThumbStudents learn the two rules of thumb when developing ideas for their body paragraphs.Lesson 6The Secret to a Coherent EssayStudents learn the key to keeping their main idea paragraphs clear and coherent.Week 4Lesson 7Writing Interesting Topic & Concluding SentencesStudents practice writing topic sentences and concluding sentences that are grammatically correct, sophisticated, and varied. We are working at the sentence level right now!Lesson 8'Storm, Seek, & SortStudents learn how to generate research questions and then find answers, a process that improves their essay's ideas and interest level. Students practice these techniques then they plan their own body paragraphs independently, all while receiving helpful feedback from the instructor.Week 5Lesson 9All the Spice & Everything NiceStudents learn critical elaboration techniques, the secret weapons to writing an interesting essay that stands apart from the rest.Lesson 10MLA Formatting & Google DocsStudents learn how to use Google Documents to write their essays. They learn to create a header, heading, and how to follow the formatting rules in the MLA style guide. They use this week to write the body paragraphs of their essays.
This class is comprehensive, and students: 1. build confidence in their ability to write effectively. 2. learn to write an essay with an effective introduction, fully-elaborated body paragraphs, and a powerful conclusion. 3. learn to use correct grammar when writing. 4. learn to generate ideas, organize their thoughts, and to think when writing. 5. learn to use a process that strengthens their ideas, organization, word choice, sentence fluency, voice, and conventions. 6. learn to work independently, using resources and a reliance on their mastery of new skills.
The founder of Lemons-Aid, Mrs. Lemons has a B.A. in English and an M.Ed in Education Administration. She is certified to teach English, has a principal's license, and has many years of experience at every level. She also supervises teachers in their undergraduate and graduate level teacher preparation programs at Colorado Christian University. She is a teacher of teachers. All teachers who teach this class have an appropriate degree, teaching experience, and training, giving your learner a teacher who is a content-area expert who loves kids. Mrs. Lemons is very selective and only hires the very best. They are star teachers!
