Students may participate in or simply observe an activity of identifying minerals by their color, luster, streak, hardness, crystal shape and density (specific gravity). Students will learn the main ways minerals are identified and categorized, how they differ from rocks and other Earth components (like air and water), and common minerals in their area. Students will be able to define mineral, and to list and describe methods of identifying and categorizing minerals. Students will be able to compare/contrast minerals and rocks, etc. Students will be able to name minerals that are common to their geographical area.
I am Pennsylvania certified in Earth Science.
If students want to participate in an activity of identifying minerals, they will need: iron or steel nail old (real copper) penny one porcelain tile or tile sample (like from a hardware store) magnifying glass liquid measuring cup kitchen scale one or more minerals. Mineral samples are available at sciplus.com and at other science supply companies. This equipment is all optional. Whatever you have or don't is fine. All notes sheets will be provided, and should be printed out before the class begins.
