課堂經歷

Students will gain an understanding of the layers of the sea and what is needed to live there. They will learn about how temperature and density affect floating. They will understand how the pressure of the water increases with depth and how body systems are affected and have adapted. They will consider how the phiolosophies of what could exist in the Mariana Trench have changed with additional research and how scientist had differing opinions throughout history. They will consider acidity and how this could affect bones and shells of living organisms. They will look at what currently exists there and consider what would a creature need to be living undetected in the sea. Students will gain confidence in their ideas as these workshops do not focus on a right or wrong answer but use our discoveries to consider what might be possible.
I have taught Science to 6- 11-year-olds for over 20 years and been trained by Evidence Based Enquiry in the Science of Learning. I have co-ordinated science and assisted others with the teaching of this curriculum area. Drop Thought Kids was run as extra-curricular activities for many years and students were responsible in suggesting their "I wonder..." question. I have a BSc in Science, Post-gradutate degree in teaching and an MA in Comparative Education.
All activities will be demonstrated but students are encouraged to do them all themselves. These will require water so a tray or area to work where water is ok is encouraged. Computers could be sat on a stable box so that it is not near the water.
Week 1 (3, 4, or 5th November): Ocean layers, temperature and vents: tank or bucket with water, 2 plastic cups, food colouring if possible to colour different temperatures of water, a thermometer if you have it, a beaker or measuing cup if you have, paper.
Week 2 (10, 11 or 12 November): Density: tank or bucket with water, 2 plastic cups, food colouring if possible to colour different temperatures of water, salt, spoon, a thermometer if you have it, a beaker or measuing cup if you have, paper.
Week 3 (17, 18 or 19 November): Size of the Mariana Trench versus living creatures: Paper, play dough or clay, ruler
Week 4 (24, 25 or 26th November): Acidity, bones and calcium: vinegar, shells, chicken bones (If having chicken dinner save the small bones and wash them and bring a jar with a lid or cup with plastic wrap to cover).
Week 5 (8, 9 or 10 December): Creatures with and without a swim bladder - controlling sinking and floating: tank or bucket with water, straw, small plastic bottle
NO CLASS ON 14, 15TH OR 16TH DECEMBER
Week 6 (21, 22 or 23 December): Pressure: paper, tape, books (to act as weights), tissues, long balloons if possible. One activity will be demonstrated and then suggested for students to do in the bath after the lesson.
