You've read the comics and seen the movies. You love superheroes, and want to design your own! In this course, students will learn how to draw the human figure and how to design character costumes and other elements in order to make the coolest, most expressive superhero possible. The class will collaborate on a few hero designs in-class, with the teacher leading drawing demonstrations based on student input.

Week 1: Fundamentals & Faces
-Brief intro to general character design principles.
-Step-by-step drawing instructions for drawing a human face in a comic-book style (part cartoon, part realistic)
-Tips on how to express your superhero's personality and powers with just their face.

Week 2: Designing the Hero, Part 1
-How to draw a human body in a basic standing position.
-Learn human anatomy and how we can tweak it to look super-human.

Week 3: Designing the Hero, Part 2
-Explore character design fundamentals (silhouettes & shapes)
-Discuss color theory, and how certain colors in a costume suggest certain traits.
-Discuss what sort of costume elements work with certain powers (a fast superhero wouldn't wear heavy armor, for example).

Week 4: Finishing Touches
-Finish any unfinished drawings from previous classes
-Learn how to draw your design in different poses.
-Tips on how to draw special effects (like laser beams, fire breath, etc.)
