This fun weekly art class is perfect for a full art curriculum for homeschoolers or any young artist seeking art enrichment with a variety of art media! Over six weeks, learners will explore a variety of famous artists and architects such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Frank Gehry, Jeanne Gang, Marc Chagall, Franz Marc, and Claes Oldenburg and learn many new art techniques while creating their own drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures! This course is "Level 4" in the series of art classes that I offer, but it is not necessary for a student to have already taken "Level 1, 2, or 3" before participating in this course! You may enroll in a different level before or after this class to complete a full semester or more of high quality art education. In this Level 4 class, students will complete a pastel cityscape, a realistic food sculpture made of toilet paper, and a creative abstract painting. These projects introduce and reinforce art history, vocabulary and artistic skills that form a strong foundation of knowledge for young artists to progress in their creative development. I have designed these lessons in conjunction with my other classes to provide learners with a comprehensive art curriculum from ages 5-15 that is fun, process-oriented, and fosters personal expression and creativity! I focus on building skills, self-confidence, and personal artistic expression in all of my classes. My teaching style is fun, easy going, patient and encouraging and all levels of artistic ability and experience are welcome and celebrated! Day 1: Cityscapes at Night In our first class, we will learn about architects such as Frank Gehry and Jeanne Gang and view a variety of interesting buildings from around the world. We will work together to learn how to draw a cityscape with a variety of buildings and practice overlapping to create depth as well as drawing buildings in 3-D. Day 2: Cityscapes at Night We will review the concepts from the previous lesson and discuss how to use the color wheel to mix and blend colors to create secondary and tertiary hues. We will learn different techniques for using chalk pastels and add beautiful color and details to our cityscapes. Learners will be encouraged to share their masterpieces with the class if they would like to! Day 3: Breakfast Buffet Food Sculptures In this class, we will be learning about the amazing sculptures of Pop Artist Claes Oldenburg! Students will view examples of Oldenburg's gigantic food sculptures, discuss what Pop Art really is, and learn the difference between 2-D and 3-D art. We will also learn about the process and materials that Oldenburg uses to create his sculptures. We will then create our own breakfast buffet sculptures– pancakes, eggs, bacon, and fruit, using just toilet paper and water. Students will learn step by step how to create all of the shapes needed to make these fun sculptures, and more, with this basic household item! Day 4: Breakfast Buffet Food Sculptures We will begin by reviewing what we learned about Pop Art and discuss the differences and similarities between Claes Oldenburg’s sculptures and our own. We will then explore how to use painting techniques and the color wheel to create the colors that we will need to make our food sculptures look realistic. Students will practice mixing primary colors to create secondary and neutral colors while painting all of the sculptures that they created in the previous class with watercolor paint. We will finish up our class by sharing our favorite food item that we made and brainstorming about other objects that students could create with toilet paper and water now that they have learned this exciting new sculpture technique! Day 5: Abstract Paintings We will begin with an introduction to Realistic, Abstract and Non-Objective Art and a variety of artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Van Gogh, Franz Marc, Picasso, Marc Chagall and Frank Stella. Learners will create an Abstract design using their imaginations and bottle of glue! We will create the outlines of our images using the glue and will then practice a variety of watercolor techniques on a separate sheet of paper. Day 6: Abstract Paintings We will review the vocabulary and discuss whether specific paintings are Realistic, Abstract or Non-Objective. We will then be using watercolor paint and the techniques we learned in the previous meeting to add color to our abstract artwork. We will be learning about how to use the color wheel and discussing various watercolor techniques as we complete our beautiful paintings. Learners will be encouraged to use the techniques we have discussed and to also creatively explore new ways of using their brushes and watercolor paint as well as their imaginations and personal creativity in their masterpieces! Please note: These classes are officially 50 minutes long but may run longer for some learners who work very meticulously. I am always happy to stay longer with these artists as they complete their masterpieces!

Hello everyone! I am Katee Gebo and I'm passionate about teaching art! My number one priority is to nurture the personal creativity of my students and foster their love for art! I want every child to be confident in the knowledge that they are already wonderful artists and have amazing ideas to share through their art! (This is absoluteIy true - I am blown away and inspired by the ideas and creativity of my learners every day!)
I have been a certified art teacher for 19 years and have a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art and a Master's degree in Art Education. I am also a working artist. My favorite media has always been oil paint, although I have really been enjoying exploring my work with ink and watercolors too!
I love to use art to foster children’s natural critical and creative thinking and communication skills. While creating art, we will also be learning about different artists, historical events, and different cultures. I believe that almost anything can be taught through art in a fun and engaging manner. I have loved seeing the knowledge, thoughtfulness, communication skills, artistic skills, and creativity of my students blossom during my art classes at Virtual da Vinci Online Art Academy, and now at Outschool!
As a teacher, I am much more concerned with the process, not the product. I often focus on abstract and non-objective art, (especially with younger students) and a variety of artists, so that children do not become overly concerned with imitating the representational art of adults and feel discouraged if their work is not realistic. I work on skills for realism as well, but I focus on learning how to observe carefully what you really see rather than a "how to draw" or "directed drawing" approach so that children gain the skills and confidence they need to create their own unique art that is meaningful and personal to them.
My goal in teaching art is for children to learn to view themselves as creative artists with interesting ideas, develop skills and self-confidence in their abilities, learn how to express themselves visually, and to be persistent, make mistakes, take chances, and, most of all, have fun!!!
