課堂經歷
This is the 4th episode in the Dragonology Adventure Quest series. Adventure Quest classes consist of cross curricular elements interwoven through an episodic storyline. Learners will add the “meat to the bones” of the adventure as they create the story together. Although each of the sections/episodes can stand alone, and learners can enter the cycle at any point, many learners enjoy following the chronological path of the story (see end of description for the chronological order) Although knowledge of the Wings of Fire books will be beneficial for this class, it is not required. Learners will discover the information they need to complete the quest through class activities. STORYLINE: Episode 4 begins with a call for help from Pyrrha, a peaceful world that has been thrust into war by a “scavenger” who killed the great Sandwing Queen, Oasis, thus beginning the Great War of Pyrrha. A prophecy foretells that 5 dragonets will come to stop the war, and The Talons of Peace have sworn to make sure the prophecy is fulfilled. Hopeful Heroes will meet weekly with Caedwyn (Our guide through the Dragonology Adventures) to follow the clues that will help them locate and rescue the 5 dragon eggs in the prophecy without the three Sandwing Princesses discovering and foiling their plan. Each session will be a “guided adventure” consisting of a basic outline using google docs, story concepting, character and narrative development and/or learner imagination. Between some sessions learners will receive coded messages from the dragon world in the outschool classroom. Together the group must find the 5 eggs Using their knowledge from Wings of Fire (which will be introduced or reviewed in the first session). SESSION 1: THE FIRST MISSION. During this session, learners meet each other, use a basic template to create their dragon, explore a brief history lesson/review of the Dragon Tribes of Pyrrha and receive their first mission through which they must use their imaginations, problem solving skills, and imagination to travel to the Kingdom of Mud and locate the Blood Red Egg through story telling. SESSION 2: THE SEAWINGS. In this timed group escape room type challenge, learners will navigate a series of puzzles to travel to the world beneath the waves and find the bluest egg. Will they choose the egg in the Royal hatchery, or search the sea for a different egg that fits the description? SESSION 3: THE NIGHTWINGS. The secretive and powerful Nightwings have decided to test the Talons of Peace before they give up one of their precious offspring. Can the dragons prove themselves worthy to care for a Nightwing egg? Learners will use their problem solving, reading comprehension, writing, and teamwork skills to answer a series of questions in a quiz/test format. SESSION 4: THE SANDWINGS: Its time for the most dangerous mission: the search for the Sandwing egg. Can the team find the abandoned egg in time? Learners will use observation, quick thinking, and problem solving skills to complete this timed escape room type challenge. SESSION 5: THE FINAL EGG: The Sandwing Princesses have caught wind of the plan to rescue and raise the dragonets and are determined to stop the prophecy. Can the team still find and save the final egg before the brightest night? Through this guided adventure, learners will put all the clues they’ve discovered so far together and complete their mission. This is the Fourth in the Dragonology Adventure Quest Cycle. Feel Free to check out the other Adventures in this cycle! 學習目標
Students will explore the given circumstances of the world created by Tui T Sutherland by concepting and exploring a prompt inspired by the Dragonet Prophecy. Fans of the series will create their own interactive story prompted by a time period not covered by the Wings of Fire series. Learners will use teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, communication, decision making, reading comprehension, code cracking, writing, imagination, and pattern recognition throughout this course.

No additional craft supplies are required, although projects will be suggested between sessions, materials for these projects are flexible and allow learners to use whatever materials they have on hand. Paper and writing utensils will be used during class to work through challenges and take notes. NOTE: If you don't see a time that fits your schedule, please send a request with times that work for you! I am often able to accommodate suggestions.
Since most of my classes depend on learner interaction, I will reach out to families enrolled in sessions that have not met minimum enrollment a week in advance of the session start date to suggest options in case the session does not meet minimum.
I am a teaching artist with a passion for immersive education using interactive techniques. Offline, I am Artistic Director of Dare to Dream Theatre, a youth theatre company highlighting learning and growth at all levels.
I teach classes combining Theater and academics. My philosophy is that learning sticks more deeply when the student is engaged in methods that best match their learning style. Studies have shown that creativity and discovering things on one’s own produce the deepest learning, no matter which style individual learner relates to. Therefore, I use interactive, immersive, theater techniques in my teaching.
I am a storyteller by nature and revel in opportunities to share stories with learners I meet. I’m working on writing a series of young adult novels, and characters and event from those stories may find their way into some of my classes.
Along with encouraging a lifelong love of reading, learning, and the arts, I enjoy being creative as well. I love to make handmade gifts and explore new techniques. I’m lucky that running a theater gives me excuses to try out new crafts and techniques when making props, puppets, and costumes. I especially enjoy scrapbooking and card making, candle making, essential oils, silk painting, drawing, resin craft, and clay work. I am amazed by the creativity of the learners I meet, and am often inspired to create with them!
“Read to Me” sessions are opportunities for students learning to read to practice literacy and reading skills with other learners at the same reading level. All Read to Me sessions provide time for each early learner to read aloud. These are practice sessions during which learners practice and develop skills they are learning with other reading teachers. They can be offered for one on one or small group (less than 6 learners) in either a public or private format.
Creative Play Dates are literacy and art based storytime/creative Play sessions for youth age 3-6. These classes can be formatted for one on one sessions, child and guardian sessions, or small groups of young readers. I enjoy mixing up formats and activities during these sessions, and often welcome input from the young guests. Some sessions will be led by a favorite character (puppet, or Miss Rachel leading the session “in character” as a favorite storybook character complete with costume, wig, and makeup) some sessions will require play dough, crayons, markers, paper, scissors etc. All sessions highlight some of the 5 skills of early literacy (Reading, Writing, Singing, Playing, Talking).
You may see that some of my book series related classes (Dragon Masters, Rainbow Magic) feature less "book club literacy" and more creative connections. In my "book club" type classes we won't read the book in class, nor will there be a reading assignment. Activities in these classes will encourage learners to retell and explore stories they already know, connecting content to creativity and logic through art, craft, and escape rooms.
Adventure Quests and Drama Quests require students in grades k+ to use their academic skills, voices, bodies, and imaginations to help a character from literature solve a challenge by taking on the role of characters that fit into the setting of the story. These sessions may require use of additional materials and familiarity with the books and characters that serve as inspiration for the Quest.
Performance classes will lead young performers through preparing a performance that will be recorded and shared with performers and their families digitally.
One on one audition coaching and acting classes will help students prepare for an upcoming audition or build acting skills.
“Let’s Celebrate!” Sessions offer fun themed activities to celebrate a birthday, holiday, or a virtual/remote play date. Activities vary based on theme, and can be customized upon host’s request for private sessions.
“From the Heart” classes allow me to share one of my hobbies creating handmade gifts. These classes alway require specific materials and are full of shared creativity and inspiration as we create together exploring one of the techniques that I use to make gifts for those I care about.
