Students will gain some experience in commanding troops with the D&D 5e Mass Combat guidelines.
Students will better understand the importance of decision-making that is inherent in military command.
Students will gain a better understanding of the intense deliberations prior to the Athenian decision to join battle against the Persian invaders. 
Students will learn about 5th century hoplite phalanx tactics.
Students will learn about the importance of terrain in ancient battles. 
Students will gain a vicarious appreciation for the reconstruction of ancient battles. 

As a certified History teacher with 30 years experience in teaching World History, Ancient History, AP Histories and an avid fan of D&D for even longer, I am very excited to bring this class to Outschool since I firmly believe that a student will gain an in-depth understanding of what it was like to be a hoplite commander during the Greco-Persian Wars. This is only the first of many other Immersive classes I have developed for the students of Outschool.

While optional, students are encouraged to conduct some research concerning the Greco-Persian Wars and the Battle of Marathon prior to the session. A link to hand outs and a presentation will be provided upon joining the class.

Students can conduct a self-assessment and group assessment based upon the outcome of the engagements, role playing, exploration and battles if they so choose. The real assessment is the degree to which they were able to immerse themselves in the hoplite battle experience in the early 5th century B.C.E. Students will advance in experience points via team work, role play and battlefield prowess.

Students can be provided with a pre-generated hoplite commander character upon enrolling and background information about the Battle of Marathon. Students will roll up their D&D Immersion (Mass Combat) character in the presence of the other team members during the "Session Zero" - please do not pre-roll your character.
