課堂經歷
Class 1: Introduction and 5-paragraph structure In this class, the student will learn the basic five-paragraph structure that complements most high school and college essay requirements. The student will learn how to successfully craft a thesis sentence, topic sentences that support that thesis, and then explain and defend those topic sentences with clear evidence in the paragraphs. This provides a helpful, easy-to-use template that will create unified essays with clear through-lines. Class 2: Eliminating "To-be" verbs through synthesizing verbs or adjectives. Unfortunately, most students simply write like they might speak. While conversational writing has its uses, it often fails to translate as strong writing on the written page. This class shows students two methods of replacing "to-be verbs" with active verbs. The student will learn to find the correct subject or object of the sentence or absorb the "to-be verb" into the adverb/adjective by using an entirely different verb. Class 3: Building Strong imagery and Metaphors. In this class, we develop the students' use of imagery. Many students conflate using elevated language with descriptive language. We will discuss what makes a good or bad metaphor, avoiding cliches, and the value of acknowledging various senses in writing (sense of smell is the most visceral thing to read but the least used by writers). Class 4: Editing the parts into the whole in your essay. In this class, we will practice editing our previous essays based on my feedback. We will focus on how to cut information by narrowing the focus of our essays and sticking close to our template. We will also discuss ways we can build extended metaphors/consistent language nuances that will make our essays clear and powerful.
學習目標
The student will learn to write consistently excellent essays at a high school level.

教師專業知識和證書
I have tutored English papers for 10 years and have both a Bachelor's degree in Bible Exposition and Theology and a Master's of Theology (Thm) with an emphasis on Creative Writing. These degrees required extensive work in literature analysis, as well as learning ancient Greek. Though my college did not offer a degree in English, I have taken 40 credits in literature and creative writing courses, the equivalent of classes for English program requirements at most universities.
