In this 4-week Flex course, you will learn techniques to develop creative lettering. This is an introductory art class that focuses on handwriting styles that you can use for making signs and cards, writing in your journal or diary, or adding artistry to your note-taking and school projects. Each week I post a video (40 - 60 mins) and learners follow the techniques as they're demonstrated in the video. Each week we cover several different techniques. The focus is not on perfection, but rather practice, experimentation and expanding your skills! Topics covered include: * Introduction & Basic techniques. * Thick letters; 3D letters; Creative fills. * Using curves; filling shapes; stretched letters. * Flourishes and cross-overs; combining techniques for a final project. SUPPLIES: Colored markers (both thin-tipped and wide tipped), pencil, eraser and ruler are recommended during the lessons. If you do not wish to print the handouts, you can use any type of paper: a sketchbook or notebook is fine, or printer paper. Other art supplies such as colored pens or colored pencils may be used, but are not required. HOW DOES A FLEX COURSE WORK? In Flex classes, there are no live or scheduled meetings on zoom. Flex classes allow the learner to enter the Outschool Classroom on their own time. I post a new video lesson each week, demonstrating lettering techniques with step-by-step instructions. Learners practice along with the video. The video ends with a homework assignment -- a fun one so you can practice your new lettering skills right away! Learners should post a photo of their completed assignment. I interact with students through discussion posts and written replies. A Flex class is great for: learners who can work on their own, and learners who prefer a flexible schedule. PLEASE NOTE that learners may need parent support to log in to the Outschool Classroom, access the weekly video, take a photo of their homework assignment and post the photo, etc. A Flex class may *not* be a good choice for: learners who want a live class with live video interaction, learners who find it difficult to work independently, or learners who will not be able to take photos of their work and upload them to the Outschool website for my feedback. NOTES - PLEASE READ! - This is not a class that learners can access "indefinitely." Please note the end date of the course, when assignments should be submitted for feedback. After the end date of this class, please note that submitting late assignments is possible for another 30 days. - For learners who are advanced artists, or who have a lot of experience with hand-lettering, consider enrolling in my Part 2 Flex class, or my Advanced Lettering Flex class instead.

Hello! My students call me Ms. Helen and I pride myself on offering classes that are great learning experiences. This includes some unique content for teens and tweens: Linguistic Puzzles; "Not Typical" writing classes; Creative Lettering techniques; and a 4-day Unusual Art Camp that introduces teens to unorthodox art mediums used by contemporary illustrators. I also provide one-on-one support for high school students writing their college application essays.
I have a broad range of teaching experience spanning 20 years, including my current teaching at the college level, as well as teaching teens, children, and professionals. I also work as an editor, creative content creator and consultant. So why teach on Outschool? I find that the small-format classes on Outschool allow for specialized topics that students can choose based on their interests.
