Week 1 ~ HISTORY OF COSMETOLOGY & MODERN DAY CAREERS In this class, through visual slides and group discussions, students will learn about Cosmetology. We will learn that Cosmetology is a term used to encompass a broad range of specialty areas. Specialty areas in Cosmetology are hair-styling, nail technology, and esthetics. Cosmetology is defined as the art and science of beautifying and improving the skin, nails, and hair. Students will also learn that Cosmetology includes the study of cosmetics and their application. Here are some examples of what students will learn about; The origins of appearance enhancement. The advancements made specifically in Cosmetology during the nineteenth, through early twenty-first centuries. What tools for cosmetic applications were made from, The reasons and what they were used for. How they were used for application for skin care, hair care and nail care, etc. What kind of materials (berries, honey, milk, etc) that were used, how and what they were used for on the hair, skin and nails. What some of the career opportunities available to licensed beauty practitioners are today. *Parents please contact me before class if you have any questions about the material discussed. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. *Students do not require any experience or knowledge in Cosmetology to take this class. This class and all the classes that follow are to help students gain knowledge in the Cosmetology field, and all the specialty fields Cosmetology has to offer. Week ~ 2 Cosmetology Career Path ~ Life Skills for Success LIFE SKILLS FOR SUCCESS In this class students will learn about important Life Skills to be a successful Cosmetologist. Students will gain an understanding, that staying focused in a salon environment will be key to their success. Students will learn that a salon is a social atmosphere. Here are some examples of what students will learn about; Guidelines for Success, Rules for Success, Motivation and Self Management, Goal Setting and Time Management. **Paper and Pencils will be needed for this class. We will have key term vocabulary to write down. We will be writing a mission statement and a few other things as well. *Parents please contact me before class if you have any questions about the material discussed. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. *Students do not require any experience or knowledge in Cosmetology to take this class. This class and all the classes that follow are to help students gain knowledge in the Cosmetology field, and all the specialty fields Cosmetology has to offer. Week ~ 3 YOUR PROFESSIONAL IMAGE In this Class, Students will learn about the importance of professional hygiene, learning about the concept of dressing for success and will demonstrate and get an understanding of ergonomic principles and ergonomically correct postures and movement. Students will read and discuss the importance of their professional image, beauty and wellness, how appearance counts, personal grooming, etc. *Parents please contact me before class if you have any questions about the material discussed. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. *Students do not require any experience or knowledge in Cosmetology to take this class. This class and all the classes that follow are to help students gain knowledge in the Cosmetology field, and all the specialty fields Cosmetology has to offer. Week~ 4 COMMUNICATING FOR SUCCESS Students will learn about the definition of effective communication, how to conduct a successful client consultation/needs assessment, and will gain an understanding on how to handle an unhappy client. We will learn and discuss how to build open lines of communication with coworkers. Students will also learn about the golden rules of human relations. Why Study Communicating for Success? Brief history of Cosmetology
~ The Egyptians - the materials used and mixtures made for skin care.
~ Central and West Africa & Middle East and North Africa (MENA)- Hammam bath, Shea tree, White clay, etc.
~ The Chinese - some ingredients used for nail tinting were beeswax, egg whites, etc.
~The Greeks - used kohl for eyeliner.
~The Romans - for skin care would use a mixture of corn with flour and milk.
~The Middle Ages - had intricate hairstyles, wore lip color.
~The Renaissance - took great pride in their physical appearance and wore elaborate clothing.
~The Victorian Age - for skin care used honey, milk, oatmeal, etc.
The Twentieth Century - beauty applications started to follow the trends set by celebrities and society figures.
~ 1901-1910 - makeup invented by Max Factor, that would not cake or crack, even under hot studio lights
~1920s - cosmetic industry grew rapidly.
~1930s - the preheat-perm method was introduced. First nail polish created.
The Barber Pole - a symbol of the barber-surgeon, roots in a medical procedure called bloodletting.
~1940s - another method of permanent waving was created.
~1951–2000 - tube mascara introduced, improved hair care and nail products.
Hair weaving using foil was introduced for coloring hair.
The Twenty-First Century - no fade hair color, age of specialization, Day Spas.

Week ~ 1 (optional) Notebook and pencil to take notes. This Lab is optional to do before class. Will need a spoon, bowl and a few towels. INGREDIENTS 1 egg, beaten 1 tablespoon whole milk 1⁄2 teaspoon olive oil 1 tablespoon flour 1⁄4 teaspoon sea salt Mix everything together with a spoon in a bowl until creamy and well-blended. Spread the mixture over your face and neck, avoiding your eyes and eye brows. Leave it on for 15 minutes. Rinse well with cool water. Pat dry. Enjoy! Week ~ 2 Paper and Pencils will be needed for this class. We will have key term vocabulary to write down. We will be writing a mission statement and a few other things as well. Week ~ 3 Notebook and pencil if you want to take notes. Week ~ 4 Notebook and pencil if you want to take notes.
