Children in grades 1 - 3 (ages 6 - 9) will have fun learning communication and conversation skills such as listening, eye contact, body language, and gestures. Learners are encouraged to turn their video cameras "on" so they can stay involved and engaged throughout this highly interactive class. - This course provides children with opportunities to practice communication and listening skills. Learners gain confidence as they use speaking skills with other children in a positive and safe virtual classroom with a supportive teacher.
My name is Dr. Julie Connor and I am a confidence builder. I help youth and adults discover their unique voice and courage to share it with others. I am a seasoned public speaking teacher and coach. I prepare youth to compete in local and national speech competitions as a speech and debate contest judge. I am also a TED speaker and author. This class involves talking AND listening. Most activities do not require reading. Children need basic English speaking skills to participate in conversations. I am not trained to teach students with intellectual disabilities.
Students practice conversation skills, including: * listening * speaking * taking turns * following directions * showing respect to others Students who are disrespectful or refuse to follow directions will be removed from the classroom.
Students can bring a favorite object, book, art work, or special item for "Show and Tell" at the beginning of every class. No materials or supplies are usually necessary for class. Sometimes we use paper, marker, and pencil for art activities.
