課堂經歷
In this class, students will be reading Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. The class will consist of a combination of: --Shared readings (teacher reads and student follows along) --Independent reading --Character study --Vocabulary study --Answering questions about the story --Writing in response to reading --Participate in a Socratic Seminar to discuss a question about the text As students read the book, we will pause to discuss the vocabulary, the characters, and the use of literary devices in the text. Specifically, we will study the use of personification in this book. Since many children's authors use personification in storytelling, this study will serve as a building block for other texts that employ this device. E.B. White’s classic novel about friendship and loyalty makes this an excellent novel for study in grades 2-4. This book touches on many universal themes in literature; friendship, self-sacrifice, the worth of the individual, tolerance for those who differ from ourselves, and the conflict or struggle of a character with an external challenge. The descriptions and rich vocabulary in Charlotte’s Web make this a wonderful mentor text as students seek to incorporate more sophisticated words and phrases into their own writing. Schedule: (Each session will involve discussion of the text through specific questions about the text) Week 1 Chapters 1-6, --What is Friendship? - Write a short paragraph on being a true friend --Personification in the text (this will be ongoing throughout the study) --Character study: Charlotte --How the author uses the seasons to tell the story (ongoing throughout the study) Week 2 Chapters 7-11 --Vocabulary study --Figuring out words through context clues or structure of the word --Characters' reactions to important events in the story. Week 3 Chapters 12-16 --Adjectives and adverbs in the text. --Practice adding description to writing --Foreshadowing - how does the author signal significant changes ahead in the book? Week 4 Chapters 16-22 --Retell the novel as a comic strip --Create a character mobile --In depth character analysis of Templeton, Charlotte, Wilbur --Socratic Seminar - Revisit Friendship using the paragraph written in week 1 - how do the characters in the story exemplify friendship toward each other? --Readers' Theater

LEARNER EXPECTATIONS:
Please refer to the Learner Safety and Privacy: For Parents https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/579976-learner-safety-and-privacy-for-parents
Learners are expected to be able to participate and to come to class prepared. I offer limited support for each student to help them get started, or to talk through any assignments or processes with them. If your learner has difficulty participating due to behavioral or developmental challenges, please be prepared to sit near your learner to facilitate his/her learning. ALL learners are welcome in my class. Some learners may not read/write as much as others, but that is just fine. The point of my classes is to improve on what a learner already knows how to do, and to expand their knowledge and skills.
CLASS BEHAVIOR/EXPECTATIONS AND MUTING AUDIO OR VIDEO POLICY:
When a behavior issue arises in class, the learner will be reminded of the class expectations and re-directed. If the behavior continues, I may mute your child, or turn off video to ensure that I provide the optimum learning experience for the other learners (I will always inform your child of my actions in the chat so as not to involve other students). Your child will still be able to access my audio and classroom presentation.
Very rarely, a learner behaves in a way that requires them to be removed from class (inappropriate behavior/language/images). In this case, no refunds or transfers will be given, and I will message you about the situation after class.
Occasionally, I may need to mute your child due to background noise I will let the child know if that occurs, and let them know that they need to raise their hand to speak. You may also need to mute your child at some point due to background noise, or other reasons. Please feel free to do this at your discretion. Your child will still be able to hear the class interactions.
