Do I put a comma here or there? Maybe it should be a semicolon and not a comma? Sound familiar? It does to me. I've read many papers written by students who do not understand when or when not to use commas and semicolons. My thinking is if they had learned that in middle or high school, then they won't have the problem when writing college-level papers. In my years of teaching college-level courses and reading hundreds of essays, I find that college students often missed the mark when using commas and semicolons. That's when I had my ah-ha moment. Why not start teaching middle and/or high school students how to use commas and semicolons before they attend college? My hope is to reach as many students as possible to help untangle when to use commas and semicolons.
