Students are welcome to just watch me perform the experiment. If they want to participate they will need the following:
1. Cabbage juice- to make it, purchase a RED cabbage (this is called red cabbage but it is actually a purple vegetable), cut into pieces and blend it with a little water. then strain the mixture to obtain a liquid that is deep purple in colour. Store in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze.
2. A variety of common household items you would like to know if they are acids or bases- good choices may be lemon juice, bicarbonate of soda, soap, milk, water, other vegetable or fruit juices. Clear or near clear liquids work best.
3. One clear cup or glass for each of the substances you choose in step 2
4. Small pieces of paper and tape or sticky notes for labelling your cups
5. A pen

If children are doing the experiment with me, an adult should be nearby to help them with sourcing materials and pouring.
