Introduction to the author and the book. Learn about what themes you should be mindful when you read. This class will also include a read-aloud of the first pages of the book to get you started on your reading!

Learn about the elements of fiction that you should be able to identify when you read a novel like this.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Annotating Text for Analysis
If a teacher asks you to “annotate while you read,” do you know what that means? Or, have you ever annotated your book only to find the whole page highlighted? Learn how to annotate effectively to help with your analysis.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
The Victorian Period
Learn about the Victorian period and how an understanding of history can help us understand classic books in their contexts.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Characterization
Use evidence from the text to describe characters and identify their important roles in the story.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Conflict
Use evidence from the text to understand the conflict presented and what the author is saying about it. Optional essay topics introduced.

Lesson 7
Deeper Meaning
Everything is an argument, even this classic piece of literature. What do you think Charlotte Brontë is arguing in this book? Locate her argument in evidence from the book.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Making Arguments
How might we use this book to answer questions and make arguments? In our last class, we will prepare ourselves for writing essays about the text by examining essay prompts and practicing arguments.
  • Students will read and analyze Charlotte Brontë's _Jane Eyre_ Students will learn college-prep reading and analysis skills for fiction.
I have a PhD in English literature, a Master's Degree in English literature, and a Bachelor's degree in English literature. Additionally, I have taught a course on the literature of Charles Dickens and a course on Early Victorian Literature at the University of California, Riverside. Additionally, I was a teaching assistant for a class on the literature of the Brontës.

細節: Students will be assigned the next section of the book to read by the next class period. The book takes the average reader about 8 hours to read and we will read some of it in class together.

細節: Optional essay topics will be assigned in week 6 and will be due the week following the conclusion of class. All submitted essays will receive feedback.
Learners should supply their own copy of the unabridged book _Jane Eyre_ by Charlotte Brontë. There is a free, online copy via Project Gutenberg here: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/1260/1260-h/1260-h.htm?hs_article_title=Jane%20Eyre

We will use the Google suite of products (Google Docs, Slides, etc.) during our discussion. Reading guides and class note outlines will be provided via Google Docs. If your learner would like to participate in these activities, they will need access to Google docs.
