課堂經歷

As a certified teacher that has taught these books many times, the sensitive topics (violence, racial slurs, death and abuse) will be discussed. These topics will be discussed in only a respectful manner to explain meanings of the extremely sensitive topics. It will be also be discussed in a manner to explain author's intent. The reading will be done at home, but we will discuss these topics as a group, and why they are hurtful and should not be used. As the discussion questions are sometimes asked by students, these questions will be answered in the best ability of the teacher in a respectful, non-opinionated manner. As a teacher, it is my duty to teach facts, not my opinion or any other's opinions. The discussions will be limited to the time of the book, and current times will not be discussed unless of course to say, these words are no longer freely used as they are viewed as highly offensive and disrespectful. Teacher will mute or turn off camera of any student that cannot show respect when discussing topics that may be more sensitive to others in the class.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Murder, use of racial slur towards Indigenous people
"Mischief is Tom Sawyer's middle name. There is nothing he likes better than playing hookey from school, messing about on the Mississippi with his best friend, the hobo Huckleberry Finn, or wooing the elusive beauty Becky Thatcher. Lazy and reckless, he is a menace to his Aunt Polly - 'Tom, I've a notion to skin you alive' - an embarrassment to his teachers and the envy of his peers. But there is method in his badness. He exhibits all the cunning of a magpie when hatching an elaborate scheme to avoid whitewashing a fence, and an adventure downriver with Huck and Joe Harper plunges the little town of St Petersburg into such an outpouring of grief that Tom is spared the belt on his return. But the innocent adventures end suddenly when Tom and Huck witness a murder in the graveyard. Should they tell of what they saw under the moonlight, when [removed word] Joe slipped the bloodstained knife into the hands of Muff Potter? Or should they 'keep mum' and risk letting an innocent man go to the gallows?" - www.bn.com
PLEASE BE WARNED of the following:
No curse words, but offensive racist language. Native Americans are also portrayed in a derogatory way. Not only is the villain called "I*jun Joe," the author attributes Joe's ruthlessness to his race. And Tom uses the word "i*jun" in other ways, such as "honest i*jun" and "i*jun-meal" (referring to corn).

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Domestic abuse, child abuse, slaves, prejudices and bigotry of the setting of the book
"Desperate to escape his abusive father and the constraints of the civilized life, young Huck Finn fakes his death and, with the help of his slave friend Jim, embarks on a vagabond life rafting down the Mississippi River. Yet life is anything but carefree for Huck and Jim. Their travels bring them into contact with scores of rogues, rascals, ruffians, hucksters, and law-abiding citizens who would as soon see Jim returned to his owners and Huck to his Pa. Looking out for each other, Huck and Jim forge a bond that protects them from the prejudices and bigotry of their time and place, and a society whose rules and regulations seem as perplexing as they are inflexible." -www.bn.com

Hatchet
Infidelity, divorce, death
Thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson, haunted by his secret knowledge of his mother’s infidelity, is traveling by single-engine plane to visit his father for the first time since the divorce. When the plane crashes, killing the pilot, the sole survivor is Brian. He is alone in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but his clothing, a tattered windbreaker, and the hatchet his mother had given him as a present. At first consumed by despair and self-pity, Brian slowly learns survival skills—how to make a shelter for himself, how to hunt and fish and forage for food, how to make a fire—and even finds the courage to start over from scratch when a tornado ravages his campsite. When Brian is finally rescued after fifty-four days in the wild, he emerges from his ordeal with new patience and maturity, and a greater understanding of himself and his parents. www.bn.com
